marriage brick wall
« on: Tuesday 26 June 07 03:45 UTC (UK) »

I have looked all over but cant find the marriage between
sarah jane jackson  born  1849
  and alfred  cooke  born 1851

the marriage  should of taken place in 1871 as the first son is born 1872 Wink
they go on to have 11 more children....so I would like to think they were married !

the second child was born 1875, so I thought maybe the first child might be from a earlier marriage  of sarahs  but cant find that,   so I still  cant figure it out Huh

Where was the first child born, that sometimes gives a clue and the mothers birth place might hold clues as to where they married. That might help someone direct you.

I am having a similar problem. I found out last night after searching for Evelyn Heatley through 10 years of the marrige registary, that I should have been looking for Mary Eveline Heatley.

Still can't find her though.  I did find she was registerd as being born in prestwich though so another piece to the puzzle .

Happy hunting.

Huh  cannot  find any records for the birth of the first boy  either...and all eleven of the other children were baptized at manchester cathedral but not him...I only know he exists because he is there on the census forms until he is 19 as son.
strange thing is in the 1871 census I find Alfred Cooke his supposed father tucked up in bed at his parents house, and I haven't been able to find Sarah Jane jackson although I think she was working as a maid, so could of moved away for work, but then how in 1875 would she be living with Alfred and the 2 kids in gorton?

Smiley Hi there Celia
yes George W  is the one I couldn't find a birth for   Shocked  where did you find him ?
I will have to get cert to see if it gives Alfred as the father  Wink
Harry Chadwick wrote a book on gorton and had this family (as they are part of his) in it and he didn't mention GW  either, but he named and gave details on the others....so something fishy....can you let me know where you found him....thanks heaps...sue

George Walter Cooke registered in Bury STK April 1/4 of 1871 4a 514. I will see if i can find the local registration office for you. When you send for the certificate give them the parents names. If they do not match they wont send it to you unless you request that they do.Then you wont waste your money.  Huh  dont think that can be him as the 1881 census says he is 9 and the 1891 census says he is 19 so I wouldnt think that two census would have it wrong by the same amount Tongue

Hi,

There is a child registered as "Male Cooke", born 2nd quarter vol 8d pg 462. Registered in Ashton (ashton under lyne).

Some of my relatives had births registered at Ashton - they lived in Newton Heath, Openshaw & Gorton areas.  Maybe they couldn't make up their minds what to call him?
