My grand daughter's 1st birthday

convicts
« on: Thursday 28 June 07 02:22 BST (UK) »

Hi all

I have two convicts in the current line I am researching. I have most of their information about their lives in Australia, but cannot find of what they were convicted.

I thought if someone had already researched them, they might be able to assist me, or someone might point me in the right direction.  I am hoping not to have to pay big $s for overseas research, and because of a medical condition am finding it difficult to get to research libraries.

I have some documentation from NSW State Records, but nothing I have shows their offences.

Details are:

Martin Bowen (Bohen, Bohan, Boham).  Tried Kilkenny  15 July 1836, age 16, life, transported to NSW on "St Vincent" 1837.  Ticket of Leave 4 Jan 1847, Conditional Pardon noted on TOL, very difficult to read but 1853.  I have his marriage, children and where he lived and died, but do not know why he was transported.

Miles Lake, convicted at Nottingham Assizes on 16 July 1812.  Life.  Native place Nottingham, Hosier, age 38.  He is bracketed on the indent with Gervas Copley and William Stanley, who appear to have been convicted at the same time.  He was transported on "Earl Spencer" 1813.

Ticket of Leave 1823, but have not found a pardon.  He married Jane Arthur in 1824 and died in 1832.

Any help appreciated.

Hello Annette,

Re Miles LAKE - have you approached the Nottinghamshire Archives?  If not, it might be worth an email to ask whether they have the information and what it would cost to obtain it.

Hi,

Just a quick thought, but many Irish convicts with political convictions quite often did not have any trial information placed against their names.  Might prove interesting to have a look at other historical events going on at the time of arrest ie sedition etc?
