Does anyone have either of these items relating to MIs in Stirlingshire pre 1855 as shown at the following link?
I'm considering buying them to share with the forum but don't want to go to the expense if someone else has them.

Hi Dave,
As far as I'm aware, there are a few people on Rootschat who already have the two Stirlingshire books (me included).
These are a good research source and if the main reason you're considering buying them is for personal research, I'd say go for it! They don't contain the full MI for each stone, it's an abbreviated version which can sometimes be a bit difficult to figure out, but you get the hang of it eventually.
Like everything else, you have to verify the information in them as there are errors here and there but if like me, you live locally, you can go along, try and find a particular stone and see for yourself what the MI actually says.
If in the meantime, you're looking for something in particular, let me know as I've been round the biggest majority of the places contained in both books and have photographs and full MI's of all the existing stones.

Thanks for replying.
The only reason I was considering purchasing the books was specifically to look for info on my paternal line - the Forrest family.
Thereafter I doubt I would have any further use for the books, other than for helping people out.
I'm looking for clues to parents and siblings of my gggg grandfather - James Forrest bc1751. I do not know where he was born or buried but I do know that he was married to Janet Rochead / Roughead in Kirkintilloch and had children in Cumbernauld, Slamannan and Campsie. He died 1824 / 5 in Camlachie Glasgow but I am unsure where he is buried. He worked in Bencloich Mill in Lennoxtown. There is an entry in the Campsie OPR relating to a James that died in Camlachie on 14 Feb 1824 aged 73 and I reckon that is him. I don't understand why the entry would be in Campsie OPR if he died in Glasgow - this suggests he was maybe buried back where he lived rather than where he died.
Hope this is all clear and if you can do the look up for me I'd really appreciate it.
I live in Glasgow but I do not have my own transport so it would be difficult for me to go round the cemeteries myself, particularly without clues to which cemeteries to visit.

Hi Dave,
I had a wee look at Campsie Churchyard MI's (in the Stirlingshire West book) but although there were a few Forrests, none match up with your folks.
The following are all the ones listed in Campsie:
1.
J C E M 1795
William Calder, his wife Mary Forrest & daughter Jean who died 8th July 1843 aged 15.
2. (Table Stone)
John Brown & Jean Forrest & Heirs
Malcolm Brown, Margaret Winning his wife who died 16th June 1839 aged 21
3. (Table Stone)
William Forrest died 14th July 1853 aged 78
His wife Margaret Frew died at Glorat Mill 8th November 1836 aged 50
4. (Flat Stone)

John Forrest, Miller, French Mill & his wife Elizabeth Millar & their children
(Stone has a carving of a miller's rhind)

John Forrest at French Mill, his wife Margery Wilson
Their 1st son John died 30th May 1822
John Forrest died 24th April 1863 aged 93

On the offchance, I had a wee squint at Slamannan & Lennoxtown churchyards but there's no Forrests listed at all.
Neither Cumbernauld or Kirkintilloch are in the books so I couldn't check that out.
One thing you do notice in the older churchyards - there are lots of stones just bearing one or two sets of initials, usually husband and wife but unless it's directly beside another one with matching names in full, there's not really much chance of proving who it is. Also, the letter J was quite often carved looking more like an I - just another wee ploy to keep us on our toes.
Drives you nuts - eh?

That is brilliant. Thanks very much for taking the time to look, and so quickly too.
As far as Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch are concerned I put the same post on the Dunbartonshire forum but no replies (yet).
All this gives me some potential leads to follow up.

Nothing in Drymen Churchyard matching the names you supplied - no McColl/McCalls at all.
The following are the only two bearing the name McAulay. (I'll translate if you don't mind - sometimes the way the inscriptions are abbreviated is a bit cryptic)
1.
John Cameron died May 1840 aged 50
His wife Ann Liddel died december 1872 aged 73
Their Children
Janet died age 21
Donald died age 14
Margaret died age 5
Marion Cameron died 16th March 1893 aged 55 (wife of Alexander McAulay)
the above Alexander McAulay, Farmer at West Caldarran died 15th September 1908 aged 81
2,
William Burns died 3rd May 1813 aged 62
His wife Jean MacAulay died 12th October 1831 aged 68
Peter Burns died at Drumglass 2nd May 1873 aged 83
His son Peter died 23rd May 1886 aged 68

I usually check all the variants anyway as the MI's in these books aren't 100% reliable.
