I need to get a marriage certificate from the registrar in devizes, but I need the reference number for it. This is different to the GRO Index number. Would I have to contact the registrar in devizes to get the reference number?
Probably. As yet the local Wiltshire BMD site has not got an index for Devizes or Pewsey online. If you have the GRO reference number, that can be ordered online at:
I really need to order it directly from the local registrar because the surnames are the wrong way round on the gro index. we think this occured when the local registrar passed the details onto the GRO.
So I get the impression that you know just about everything - including the church? - except the reference number. Contact the register office giving all the details that you know and they should be able to locate it, but it may cost a bit more than normal.
In the past I've found the Registrars' offices are generally sympathetic (not tried Devizes I must admit) and a phone call generally smooths the way 01380722162. Cost usually £7, for the certificate that is not the phone call Cheers Dave
