Hi James, There are Phimisters in my family tree although I don't know much about them. I have Isabella Phimister, can't find any date of birth although she was 28 in the 1851 cenusus. She married John McKenzie (quarryman) in Broadhaven (?) on 31st Jan, 1840. Her father (I am assuming) was George Phimister, farmer. He is mentioned in the marriage entry as the witnesss "for the woman". I haven't been able to find any birth or death details for Isabella. I do know she had a son George Phimister McKenzie born around 1851 in Wick.
It's all a bit vague I know! Thanks Bec Australia

Hi Bec,
Thanks for your reply.
For starters, I have:
Marjory Phimister (schoolteacher) married a James Mitchell b around 1846.
James was brother to Charles Mitchell, fishcurer, Fraserburgh b. 1826 married to Janet Rettie.
Their daughter Mary Ann Mitchell married Peter Slessor.
There's loads of stuff going sideways, but so far, I've not gone far purely with Phimister.
James.

Hi James, I'm having a lot of trouble finding my Phimisters! I can find Isabella in the 1851 census without any trouble but not in the 1841 or any subsequent to 1851..it's very odd. Like the family just disappears.

Hi there Bec,
It really is inconsiderate of these ancestors to be so elusive, right? Did the name itself find its way to Oz or just the genes?
This isn't a name I'd had any contact with until recently. I believe there are still Phimisters in Caithness (Wick) but haven't uprooted them as yet.
For me, it is a connecting name rather than a main research one. That said, I don't like leaving a job half done.
James.

Hi James, Thanks for the msg...I had joined the Caithness.org forum but haven't had time to look or post
It certainly looks like the right Isabella although I have no idea about her parents...I haven't found death details or any other details other than her marriage to John Mckenzie and the 1851 census. I can't figure out why she disappears when I'm only changing the census year and her age. Any tips??
The McKenzie line is actually the "main" line. My Grandmother was a Mackenzie/Mckenzie and George (born 1850 in Wick) was her grandfather. So I don't think the Phimisters made it out here through that line!

Hi Tricia, I've seen that family but the ages of John Mckenzie and Isabella don't fit with the 1851 census. Isabella was 28 on the 1851 census while John was 47. I have John's date of birth as 21.8.1804 in Gairloch, Ross and Cromarty.
James...can you give me a clue how you found the 1790 George Phimister and Alexanderina Wares? I haven't been able to turn them up
Thanks! Bec
