From the 1851 census.....

Surname    First name(s)    Rel    Status    Sex    Age       Occupation       Where Born       Remarks
MACKENZIE John       Head       M            M         47    Fisherman     Ross and Cromarty -Gairloch

MACKENZIE Isabella     Wife    M            F           28       -         Caithness - Wick
MACKENZIE John       Son       -            M        8       -           Caithness - Wick
MACKENZIE Alexandrina Dau    -           F                5            -             Caithness - Wick
MACKENZIE Margaret     Dau       -           F           3       -        Caithness - Wick
MACKENZIE George   Son       -          M          11m       -        Caithness - Wick

The age of John ties in with the birth year of 1804.  This is the only tie-in I can find! I wonder if they
recorded their ages incorrectly in other years???    OR....as John and Isabella were married in 1840 she would have only been 17 when she was married. I wonder if this accounts for the apparent changes in her age??

Just some ponderings!

And a few more ponderings....a couple of deaths, both in Wick.

1859, George Phimister, Innkeeper, aged 66. Parents were George Phimister - Farmer, and Christina Phimister, maiden surname Bremmer.

1858, George Phimister, Fisherman, aged 68. Parents were John Phimister - Mason, and Isabella Phimister, maiden surname Munro.

The second one fits better with a 1790 birth for George! Plus (for me at least) him being a fisherman
ties in with the rest of the family further down.

Re: PHIMISTER Geo m to Al'ina Wares
« Reply #17 on: Wednesday 08 August 07 17:56 UTC (UK) »

Does it show the spouse on the George death certs?Huh Who was informant on both?  Think both ages are wrong on death.

I have George  died 1959 Broadhaven Wick was a farmer then innkeeper - his widow Alexanderina Wares was registered as the Innkeeper 1861 1871  She died 9 Jan 1873 Broadhaven Wick.
Census for George m to Alexanderina in 1851 he was 60. in Broadhaven.
If his death give Phimister/Bremner parents then
Son of George P and Christian Bremner b 28 Apr 1790  C110432 .

Other George b 20 June 1792 to John Ph and Isobel Monroe -   married to Marjory Gunn was fishcurer in Louisburgh Wick 1851.

Gosh this gets confusing Smiley

Tricia unfortunately the spouses aren't mentioned  Sad

For George the Innkeeper, (d. 1859) the informant is James Phimister, his son.

For George the Fisherman, (d. 1858) the informant is John Phimister, his brother.

James, Phimisters stop with Isabella for me once she became a McKenzie Smiley

Was only a thought, as I'd seen a stone in the Thurso cemetery.
Took around 40 pics there.

YAY  Grin
I finally found the death cert of Isabella McKenzie (Phimister). Sometimes it's as much as
the details you leave out as the details you put in that helps turning things up.  She died in 1894

Her parents were George Phimister and Alexanderina Wares...so I've finally figured
out the right George.  Am just sorting through some of the other details you
posted previously Tricia...bedtime on this side of the world though!

Couldn't sleep....decided to use up my Scotland online credits instead Wink

Quote
George PHIMISTER,1790 -1859  was son of George PHIMISTER ( - ) and Christian BREMNER ( - ), was a Farmer/Innkeeper
Alexandrina WARES, 1791 - 1873    was daughter of James WARES (1761-aft1841) and Isobel GRAY ( -bef1841),

Tricia on the death certificate I found for Alexandrina WARES, (d. 9.1.1873, Wick) her parents are given as James WARES and Ann BREMMER or BREMNER...no Isobel Gray.

This is too confusing. Roll Eyes  Smiley

When i was a boy in Wick there was a family called Phimister who had a large shop in McArthur St. this was in the 1940's and possibly the early 50's but I know little else abot them. the shop then became a Co-operative Haberdashery

Merry Christmas from Mr and Mrs Keehner c1890

Hi
Just joined and seen this thread.
My paternal grandmother's maiden name was Phimister, although both she and her father John, were born in Sunderland, Co Durham.
His father was Alexander Phimister, a mariner, born in Caithness, Wick.
However, can't find any mention of him in birth registers in Scotland's People.
Guess most of the Phimisters were probably related; not sure how common the name is.
