Ballymacarrett
« on: Sunday 01 July 07 12:26 UTC (UK) »

Are there parish records for Ballymacarrett at all?

I'm looking for a birth in about 1812 of Thomas COSGROVE, son of James or John Cosgrove.  He says he is a native of Co Down and was working on an estate/farm called Henryville when he joined the RIC.

However, maybe I need to spread my net a bit wider and say parish records for Co. Down?!

thanks

Ros Davies has such a good Co Down site freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/eg

One example from Cosgrove
James CROSGROVE . Comber of Ballymaglave; leased a house & small garden in Henryville in 1863 from William Morrow GV
Then for placenames
Henryville Comber . house & farm in Ballymaglaff townland; leased by Robert Simonton in 1863 from William Morrow  GV ; OS map 1902 5.10
Henryville Knockbreda . residence & small farm; just S of Ballymacarret; click here for a photo and more information  .
Then for Ballymacarrett Knockbreda 15:35/75  a 2km E of Belfast & now part of the suburbs;a townland of 575 acres & a town & a parish;in 1834 there was a Church of Ireland, 2 Methodist Churches & a Catholic chapel in town; etc etc
Ballymacarrett House Knockbreda . farm estate; just SE of the town in Bryson Street; residence of Joseph Patton Esq. in 1852 etcetc

From my own interests in Comber civil parish
Cosgray, John, Ballymalady, , Householder 1863, 4 Ie Griffiths V See Http://www.failteromhat.com/
Cosgrove, J, Mr. J. COSGROVE . Comber Teacher At Gransha School In 1836 V7 P 34 OSM, See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/
Cosgrove, James, Henryville, , Householder 1863, 4 Ie Griffiths V See Http://www.failteromhat.com/

Finally for Ballymacarett records look under Knockbreda churches on Ros Davies site.
Sadly problems are occurring with the most recent Comber website
Anyway that should make you busy, good luck, Jim

There isn't any doubt that Ballymacarrett is in Northern Ireland but Belfast area falls between Co. Antrim and Co. Down so it's been suggested to check both counties when searching (on Rootschat Belfast queries are under Co, Antrim).

Yes indeed, I recently asked a distant relative in Co. Down to explain to me where the county boundary runs through Belfast, as an ancestor from Belfast who finished up in the poorhouse in Jedburgh, Scotland, is described as from the County Down, but her daughter in Glasgow gives her place of birth in the census as Ireland, Co. Antrim.
