Owen WARD, Occupation Miller
« on: Sunday 01 July 07 22:46 UTC (UK) »

Found a reference to an Owen WARD on Griffiths Valuation which gives towland as Brierfield South and the parish as Abbeyknockmoy.

The Owen I am researching was a miller.

Does anybody know if the occupation of miller was specifc to an area and if so, would Brierfield South be likely?

With thanks,
Gail

Hi Gail,

The Galway Valuations took place in 1855.

William E. Hogg published a book titled "The Millers and the Mills of Ireland of about 1850." 2nd ed. Dublin: William E. Hogg, 2000 which may mention Owen Ward's mill.

Hi Christopher,

Always good to hear from you - and thanks again for all the help you've given with various names and questions.

As it happens, the WARD line, was a red herring but I am in touch with the 'rightful heirs' - Owen's daughter, Margaret, emigrated to Australia and married a convict, Patrick O'SULLIVAN (not the Patrick O'SULLIVAN from Co Kerry who was my ancestor) - and I will pass your reply onto these researchers.

All the best,
Gail

Hi Gail,

I am also researching that Owen Ward, from Brierfield - are you still in contact with the Ward/O'Sullivan descendants?  If so, any suggestions on how I might get in contact?

Cheers, Di

Hi Gail

Not sure if you're still interested but I'm a decendant of Patrick Sullivan and Margaret Ward (they are my g.g.g grandparents). My father is currently doing some research into our family history so he might be a good person for you to get a hold of. He's done pretty much all he can do here in Aus so now he needs to tackle the Irish part! We still live only a couple of hours from Lostock and Paterson, where Patrick and Margaret lived. We've moved about 200kms in 4 generations, not fast movers!

If anyone can give us some info regarding Margaret Ward's family in Ireland (or Patrick Sullivan's for that matter) it would be greatly appreciated because our family is planning a trip to Ireland early next year and we would love to visit any place that is (even distantly) connected to our family.

if anyone else on this thread can help too, or put us in contact with someone who can, it would be great.

cheers

Welcome to Rootschat. Gail hasn't been online since 2007 but perhaps she'll see this message and get in touch or someone else might be able to help you.

Hello

For the reasons set out below, I am almost certain that Margaret, daughter of Owen Ward from Brierfield, was not your Margaret Ward who married Sullivan.

My 3xgt grandfather was Owen Ward, the person listed in the 1855 Griffith's Valuation at Brierfield South, in parish of Abbeyknockmoy (near Tuam) in Co Galway.  [NB Owen was not a miller; he was a farmer]

Owen married 3 times.  He had 3 sons (at least) with 1st wife and a son & 3 daughters with his 2nd; no known children from his 3rd marriage.  A 5th son is also known to exist but it's not clear which wife was his mother.  John, my 2xgt grandfather, appears to have been the eldest child (born 1843) and Margaret is thought to have been the youngest - born 1871.

In 1889 Margaret was the informant listed on Owen's death cert - he died at Brierfield.  The 1901 Galway census (taken 31 March) shows Margaret living with her brother in the 'original' family home at Brierfield, but shortly later that year - between Apr & Jun, Maggie Ward married William Cosgrove.  The 1911 census has Margaret & William Cosgrove, with their 4 children (including a son named Owen) living in nearby townland of Windfield Lower.

But don't despair.  There were (and are) many Ward families in that area of Ireland; I have details of those from around Brierfield.  There was also another Owen Ward listed in the Griffith's Valuation - he was at Esker, a little further south.  Apart from the Wards who have farmed the same land for at least 200 years, today in Tuam there are also many Wards with 'Traveller' origins.

What do you know of your Margaret Ward's origins - dates / locations?  There may be something in my records that can help.
