MACCLESFIELD DYE WORKS
« on: Monday 02 July 07 09:52 UTC (UK) »

I am looking for info on the former Dye Works situated on London Road in Mcclesfieldright next to the river and railway, now called London Road Terrace.

Date built?
Name of owner?
Is the large house adjacent connected with the owner/manager?

Hello
I don't know if 1902 Macclesfield  will be of any use to you,but by coincidence this afternoon i was going through Kelly Cheshire directory looking for something.I saved my places in Macclesfield, New Brighton,Seacombe, & Neston Cum Parkgate .So i could go straight to them when needed.
If you want to see if you can find any info on the dye works
I took the image back to 412 = page 398.  you can go back to previous page  to the beginning if you want. You might have to enlarge the image as the print is small. On these page you will find schools, church, council department and  usually some decent info on them. The image 412 does have a mention of wool mills, but you need to trawl  back the pages. If you don't find anything go forward again from image 412. Good luck

Hi

The earliest mention of that dye works is in the 1860 Whites Commercial Directory, the owner was a William Hulme, the 1861 census shows William living on or close to London Road, his house and a couple more just named as "The Hulmes". At the time of the census he employed 18 men and 2 boys.

William died in 1870. His wife Elizabeth, son William and daughter Mary are shown in 1871 census as living at "Bollin Mill or Hill" (just past the Albion pub and Albion St. (if you know Macc at all) it seems that his sons carried on the bussines, and in the 1874 Kelley's directory it is known as W H & T Hulme, with the family now living at 56 Byrons Lane.

It would appear that from the details given in the 1881 census and  the 1888 Slaters Directory that the family had built or moved into a house in London Road Terrace, the house was known as "Brook House" and the head was a Thomas Hulme silk dyer employing 14 men.

The family are still at the same address in the 1891 and 1901 census and in the 1902 Kelley's Directory.

W T & H Hulme Silk Dyers are shown in the 1914 as being still in bussines at London Road. Thomas Hulme is shown living at Holly Bank London Road

In 1934 a William Hulme is shown living at Brook house. But there doesn't seem to be a dyeworks mentioned.

Hopefully all the above relate to the 2 premises you enquired about.
