Hall of Doorpool
« on: Friday 10 December 04 10:35 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find more information about my great great grandfather John Hall who with his wife Mary (Younger) migrated to South Australia from Roxburghshire in the ship Ariadne in 1839 with their son Thomas, aged 16.  My mother told me he came from Roxburgh, but I now believe he lived in the village of Doorpool, which I believe is now just ruins. Can anyone tell me anything about Doorpool or the Hall or Younger families? Thanks  Smiley

Hi

Doorpool is the name of a farm that lies approx 7 miles from Jedburgh and Hawick in the Scottish Borders.

John and Mary were married 19/04/1812 at Oxnam - 6 miles from Doorpool.

Hello

It was a nice surprise to hear from you.  And exciting to learn a bit more about my paternal great grandfather and great grandmother.

I did not have the date or place of their marriage, so thank you very much for that information.

No, I do not have census documents of that area – any idea how I can access them?

If it’s not too much trouble I would really appreciate any photo of Doorpool if you can manage it – I’m very new to this too!

We know that John was 84 years old when he died, but not the year, and don’t have his or Mary’s date of birth.  He is buried at Mount Barker cemetery, about 30 kilometres from where I live in Adelaide, South Australia, but the headstone is almost indecipherable, so I must chase up church records. Mary is also buried there and part of the headstone inscription reads “Mary, Beloved wife of John Hall, Formerly of Roxburghshire, Scotland.”

My wife and I are planning to travel to Europe next year and I would dearly love to get to Roxburgh and Doorpool to see where they lived.

Again, thank you so much for your help.

That’s fantastic. Thank you.

You have been a great help.

Many thanks for the photo.  Looks wonderful and makes me more determined than ever to get there next year.

Was intrigued by your mention of Hall ancestors in your Bell tree.  If there’s any connection and you’re interested I have a photo of John and Mary Hall.

Keep in touch, and maybe we can meet next year!

Regards

RICHARD BELL - MARGARET HALL
Gender: Male Marriage: 25 MAR 1858 Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland
The above is my Hall/Bell connection.  She was Richards's second wife and they emigrated to USA.  She was born in 1832 in Oxnam -  cannot actually find this date - she died in 1906 in the US.  Need now to find her family - likely the same ones if from Oxnam/Hownam/Crailing
