George CRAGO(E)'s parents....
« on: Monday 02 July 07 21:39 BST (UK) »

Hi

Any help here would be appreciated - i'm at a loss.........

george crago, 22, married elizabeth allen, 22, on  30 september 1856 at st blazey in district of st austell

ok - on marriage cert. his father is john, labourer
her father is john, copper miner

in 1851 census, i have found an elizabeth allen, aged 16, works at tin mine - she is listed as born in buckland monachorum, devon - father john is born in st blazey (wife = constance......) could be correct

however - 1851 census i cannot find ( i'm using freecen) -

can anybody find a link for george and john with a possible mother and links further back?

thank you

the reason for the confusion is that IGI has a george crago born, west looe, 23 april 1836 and christened 11 may 1836 - this ties up with his age (approximately) - however, they give his parents and GEORGE and elizabeth.......

These are all I have with parents John & Mary Ann in Fowey. Do they help?  If not, I will trawl my database and see what else I can find.

Fowey

Jane CRAGO dau of John & Mary Ann, 19th. December, 1824. Father-Labourer.
John Williams CRAGO son of John Phillipps & Mary Ann, 18th. February, 1827. Father-Labourer.
Louisa CRAGO dau of John & Mary Ann, 28th. August, 1842. Father-Labourer.
Joseph Williams CRAGOE son of John & Mary Ann, 28th. June, 1829. Father-Labourer.
Amelia CREGOE dau of John & Mary Ann, 19th. January, 1840   . Father-Labourer.
Elizabeth CREGOE dau of John & Mary Ann, 16th. April, 1837. Father-Labourer.
Sarah Ann CREGOE dau of John & Mary Ann, 13th. July, 1834. Father-Labourer.

Hi there - notice the variant spellings of Crago, Cragoe, Cregoe.......

I've just had a look at FreeCen for 1841 (not definitive I know) and ther is only ONE George Crago (with father John) in single figure age bracket. Same siblings, so can i say for sure this is one and the same?

I would not be happy accepting this George unless you have checked all other possibilities.  Did you check the 1851 for all name variants?

1851 census shows

John P Crago - Head - Widow - 50 - Ag Lab born Lansallos, Cornwall
Joseph P Crago - U - 22 - Seaman - born Fowey
Sarah A Crago - U - 18 - House Servant - ditto
Elizabeth Crago - U - 15 - Errand Girl - ditto
Amelia Crago - 11 - Scholar - ditto
Louisa Crago - 8 - Scholar - ditto
William H Crago - 5 - Scholar - ditto

this seems to tie in - No George........

Mary Ann could well have died giving birth to William according to FreeBMD - 1846/1847

in 1861 census, John is still alive living with Sarah A and William Henry but there is an additional son Jonathon 11, and daughter Amelia 4......!

1871 has John, 71 living with Sarah Ann Vane - their is no husband to Sarah Ann but she has amongst her children an Amelia aged 13.........gone off track here slightly........

I will check my database tomorrow, and see if I can come up with any alternatives for you.  We need to find George and prove he is the one you want - a process of elimination.
