Parish Church of Claines - St George?
« on: Tuesday 03 July 07 16:54 BST (UK) »

I have a marriage cert from 1939 stating Parish Church of Claines S George in county of Worcester.

I can't find anything  about a St George in Claines.

Anyone heard of it. The vicar (D.W. Maclagan) signed the cert and he ought to know the name of his church !

Hi . the original  and main church is definitely St Johns (Look at my site and http://www.clainesfriends.org.uk) But  St George was a curacy see www. genuli.org .uk/big/eng/WOR/Claines/Gaz1868.html  The new church of St. George, consecrated in 1895, which replaced an earlier smaller building in St. George's Square, Barbourne, Worcester.

So is St George's church in Barbourne ? Because the only one I can see in Worcester is the Catholic church.

Barbourne is an area about a mile north of the city centre usually called South Claines

I noticed your message about St. George's, and thought I'd attach a photo if it would be of interest.  The confusion arises because the original Claines was a large parish that stretched down to the walls of the original city.  As the city grew northwards, a Chapel of Ease was established at what become known as St. George's Square in 1829.  The immediate area around is loosely known as Barbourne.  This became a parish in its own right in 1861, and the current church (replacing a smaller one) was built in 1896 (by Sir Aston Webb, who among other works, remodelled Buckingham Palace).  The post code if you want to find it on Multimap is WR1 1HX.

What a beautiful photograph. Thank you very much for posting.
And for the information about the church.

Edit: can you change the format of the picture so I can save it to file. It's not letting me for some reason. Thanks

Mary

Glad to have been of help.  Its not a bad spot!  The name of the officiating priest "Maclagan" is correct as he was the incumbent from 1928 to 1945.

I've just tried saving the file to my PC and it worked okay.  Right click with your cursor over the image and you should get an option to save the picture (and rename it if necesaary).  Its a jpg file so should be readable by most packages (Word, FamilyTree Maker etc).  I'm new to Rootschat so there may be some restriction that I'm not aware of.  Let me know if you still have problems.

Regards
Simon
