Hello
Having been a member of this site for over a year, you might think that I should be capable of performing a very simple little task by now, but try as I may I cannot do it.
Would someone please explain to me how to place a valid link to FreeBMD into a post? I do not want to know how to place an invalid one; I am very proficient at doing that already.
It does not seem to matter whether I paste a copied link or actually type it out, as soon as I try to convert it into an hyperlink on the site it defaults to a different entity which only leads to an error message.
I have noticed that lots of other users have the same problem (but they may not be aware that the link they have posted does not work). However, I have also noticed that a gifted few seem to be able to post a link that actually works.
Please tell me how to do it
DS

Hi DS, I think you may be trying too hard.
The 'Link' attribute is automatic when an http:// is detected - or even www depending on the sites interpretation.
click on the address in the addres bar and copy it with CTRL-C or COPY (from a right click drop down menu)
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
Of course, FreeBMD is the exception as it doesnt have a TLD of WWW -
For an existing link already formatted, right click and then click on 'COPY SHORTCUT'
Hope this helps ?

Hi Newfy
One of the very "gifted" few.
You are correct in that I am very trying.
I think that I was doing exactly what you said by getting the link from the address bar and pasting it into the message.
It then defaults to say exactly what your link says http://www.freebmd.rootsweb.com/
The difference however is that yours goes to the FreeBMD home page but when I try mine in the Preview box it still goes to a page which says
Server not found. Firefox can't find the server at www.freebmd.rootsweb.com
Unless it only does that in the Preview? Lets see.
DS
Addendum
What it is doing is adding the www automatically. How can I stop it doing that ?

must be a Firefox thing ?
Dunno
Strange tho, if you are copying out of the Address bar, and pasting into a post here, when does it get prefixed ?
Its only FreeBMD of the typical sites we use that doesnt use the WWW TLD - so for now, just delete it manually.

This is what it says in my address bar for the FreeBMD home page
http: www f r e e b m d. o r g. u k/ (double spaced so that it hopefully does not default to the other address)
When I then put that into a message it defaults to http://www.freebmd.rootsweb.com/
I will remove the www. manually and see if that does work
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/
And it does seem to, as above
Thanks Newfy (but isn't it strange ?)
Hi Jan
Glad that it was not just me

Hi Folks
I am sorry to say that this is a known Rootschat fault!
There have been other threads on it in the past - Rootschat alters the URL as you are posting it - don't ask me how!?!
kind regards, Arranroots

Hi Arranroots
Just to emphasise a key point, however, that although it is a fault, it can be made to work correctly by doing what Newfy suggested and removing the www. from the default link before it is posted.
