HAYNES/HAWNES
« on: Wednesday 04 July 07 19:36 BST (UK) »

Hello All,
Does anyone know approx when Hawnes became Haynes? Also, on family pedigrees/trees is it correct to use the place name as it was spelt at the time of the person's birth, or do you substitute it with the modern version?
Cheers,
Bob

It was still Hawnes in the description of the parish in the 1901 census, although an 1866 gazetteer described it as Hawnes or Haynes.

And your second question it's probably a matter of personal preference - doubtless the purists would say it should be shown as the name by which it was known at the time of the event; others would say use todays spelling. Wilstead/Wilshamstead; Shillington/Shitlington are other examples. I use todays spelling, perhaps inconsistently! But always the county in which it was situated at the time, not post 1974 counties

Thanks, David.
By the way, I noticed your interest in Peacocks - any links to the auctioneers?

Hi Bob

Not that I'm aware of, although I haven't researched them much into the 20th century. Mary Peacock from Southill was my great grandmother

All the best

Just in case you weren't aware the village has a very informative web site at:
http://www.haynesvillage.co.uk/

or

http://www.haynesvillageuk.co.uk/index.html

Also the 2nd edition of the book 'The Little Guide to Bedfordshire & Huntingdonshire' published in 1929 lists it as Haynes or Hawnes.

Hey Alan,   I know someone not many postings away who has that book.

Anyway Bob, in the Bedford library local studies centre, they have a folder for each & every village with extracts from various directories etc. . . . For Haynes generally most extracts say Haynes or Hawnes, with just Hawnes being quoted for the much earlier dates. There was no mention as to when Haynes became the commonly used name as it is now.
