Can anyone point me in the direction of how to find a birth in Italy in 1898?
I know the name and birth date, but not the region of Italy or parentage.
Thanks!

Unfortunately I think that you need to know the commune where the person was born, as far as I know there are no centrally-held records.
You could try the IGI, they have some Italian records but I suspect that they are nothing like as complete as the UK.
This website might give a clue: http://gens.labo.net/en/cognomi/ Type the surname in the Cognome box to see the name distribution.
Are you aware of the Anglo-Italian Family History Society? http://www.anglo-italianfhs.org.uk/ There's a lot of information on their website that might well help you.
Good luck
Colin

Thanks Colin. Think he may have been from Lombardy in the North, maybe Milan.

Without the town of birth, it will be difficult to get the birth act. I suggest you join this site:
http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/index.php
They are experts on tracing your Italian ancesters, and can give you a lot of help.
I emailed the archives of my ancesters town, and recieved his birth act from 1872, I found his town of birth, from a 1st cousin of my father, who remembered her mother saying it!! So, ask around, you never know!! This site gives help on writing in Italian,
http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resources/letters/statocivile.asp
it can be difficult, but not impossible!! Also a clue can be where he settled in this country, mine was Birmingham, and most Italians came from the Lazio area!

hi, just joined this forum and am looking for Russian and German ancestors, buy browsing I saw your message. I live in Italy and would be happy to help if I can, but unfortunately it is very hard to get information here. Basically you have to find the comune where the records are registered, since there is no national register. There is a very good site which will tell you the geographical location of surnames and if you need any help with translation I would be delighted to help. Aylene

Hi Aylene I've just spotted your kind offer as I was browsing too. I thought I'd be cheeky & ask if there is any possibility you could check my rellies for me. My gggrandfather was Joseph Podesta b 1830 in Genoa. In 1851 he is lodging in Saffron Hill London with a load of other Italians & what I assume is his brother Francis, 4 years younger, they are all musicians. I assume they have not been the country long before this.
I know this is a long shot but I'd be very grateful for any info. Thanks so much Jacqui
