hi pal,

1841 census- hopetoun street, bathgate

john...age 55...postman/letter carrier
janet...age 45
janet...age 10
john...9
peter...age 7
christian...age 5

all born in west lothian except janet senior

this looks like his grandchildren that are with him.

smith is working on a farm in whitburn.

1841 census- latchbrae, whitburn (farmer thomas brae's)

smith...age 15...male servant

igi's show extract's for john's children, no doubt you can clarify billy, these are all christening dates pal.

james...16/11/1806
archibald...21/8/1808
john...24/3/1811

then there's nothing until

christian...30/5/1824
smith...5/3/1826
samuel martin

now going on the scottish naming system, i checked for a son called john born in bathgate with a father james....

john...21/5/1786(christing date) son of james and christian wright.

Hi Billy,

I'm puzzled  Grin

John & Janet don't seem to be at all elusive!

From your other threads, particularly (but not only):
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,198552
and
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,230683
it seems that, with the help of RootsChatters, you have a wealth of information about them.

John ANDERSON, Letter Carrier - you have John's death in 1860 and his Will (24 Jan 1860, John ANDERSON, Letter Carrier residing in Bathgate; have you downloaded this?) and where he is buried.  And, from his death, you have the names of his parents (James ANDERSON Weaver & Christina WRIGHT) which leads (in the IGI) to John's christening in 1786 and to names of his siblings ...

You also have further information about some of the children of John & Janet.

Smith ANDERSON - you have a lot of information about John & Janet's son Smith ANDERSON (I see there's a record for him also in the Wills & Testaments section of SP) including his MI.

John ANDERSON - it seems very likely that the children with John & Janet in the 1841 census (posted previously) are children of their son John ANDERSON & Janet RAE (see the IGI).

Other children - you also know of at least two children of John & Janet in addition to those recorded in the IGI/SP.  These are William (b Bathgate ca 1819) about whom you have masses of information (including his MI) and Janet who (as Janet MCDONALD) was the informant of John's death.

Many people have looked very carefully and many times without success for the marriage of John & Janet, and for births/baptisms of children (especially William) to them between 1811 and 1824.
Given this, one has to suspect that such records are simply not there to be found.

Postal records - I am wondering what you are hoping to find in postal records?  The site posted by Ann is very well worth delving into and gives a good idea of what can - and perhaps more importantly what cannot - be found in the postal records.  My experience (I have a letter carrier ancestor) is that you might find a brief entry of his appointment (the original papers have not been retained) and possibly nothing else.  But it is always worth trying.

Good luck!

Scotland - HALL, HARLEY, LOCHTY/LOCHTIE/LOUGHTIE/LOUGHTY (very rare), MCLAUSE/MCLAWS/MCILHOSE/HOSE (quite rare and many very variable spellings - close to 100 to date), PHILP/PHILIP, VASSIE; Ireland - BOURKE/BURKE, DONOHUE (many spellings), DOOLEY, KINSELLA, MAXWELL, OSBORNE, RAFFERTY, STA(U)NTON, SULLIVAN; England - BAYES, BROWNELL, DALTON, FREEMAN, HACKING, PIERCY, SIDDLE, SWIFT, SULLIVAN, TINK(L)ER, TRIPPIT.  Any spellings and many other names!
