Ooh "Training corps volunters" sounds good. Platelayers would work on an Iron clad ship wouldn't they. sounds very promising to me.
well, we'll see how the Occupations forum does on this site. Perhaps someone will spot it and know exactly what's going on and who those 'dwarves' are.

An additional message from the National Railway Museum (ive clearly got them thinking!)
Since replying I did have one thought, it could be a ‘leave’ photo, one of the sailors being related to one of the other uniformed staff.
it's an idea.. although Little Downham is quite a way inland to drag your sailor chums to.

thanks for that info.
I'm not aware of any connection with the Navy, Gossport or Beddenham - but then, sometimes there's a surprise just waiting round the corner, so i'll try and contact the Royal Navy (Ely) and see what they think. In addition, I may drop the Ely Standard or Cambridge Evening News a message and see if they can shed any light on the matter.
I've just posted a zoomed in, and a negative version of a close up, of the text on the jumper of the man on the far left in the front row of the photo.

Take a look just below the hand of the guy standing on the right (our right, not theirs). What's that sticking out from behind his leg? Could they be on board ship?
Perhaps the five dark lines beyond it are ships railing. The mountain/cliff in the background is intriguing. Nothing like that in East Anglia a far as I remember.
My vote is that they are on board ship.

Just a few observations..
I think the monkey could have belonged to the sailors. The gentleman at the back right hand side looks oriental. The chap in the front row definitely looks like he's wearing a false beard. After a closed look at the 'background' I think it could have been a studio with a background cloth.
Not very helpful I know. Will watch with interest.

I've stared at your photo for a long time trying to think what it reminded me of. 
Now I've got it....
I had a picture of my sister sitting on a Polar Bear. 
Many years ago at the seaside there were photo studios that had various scenarios. You could dress up, get in front of a backdrop and make out you were in Darkest Africa or in Ancient Rome and the like. They supplied the clothing and props.
In your picture a lot of those beards look phony, even the monkey could be stuffed and I'm sure the the background is painted.
What do you think?

I agree with the phoney background. I believe that is a painted canvas or something similar.
I'm not sure about the beards and the monkey though.
If my Gt Gt Grandfather was sitting on a polar bear then i too would suspect it was posed, as they don't tend to let you do that

I have just looked at the Downham site and see that the Parish Magazine for 1897 has been posted.
At that time there was a record of frequent concerts and an active Glee Club.
I realize that you estimate that the picture is from an earlier era but the tradition of concerts could have been in existence.
From the Parish Magazine 1897:
"ON Monday evening, March 1st, a Concert will take place in the School. This promises to be a particularly good one, and we think will afford much amusement and entertainment. It will consist of songs, duets, recitations, and a most amusing dialogue. It will begin at 7-30."
"The next Concert will be on Monday, April 25th, for which Mr. Vallis? Nigger Troupe are making great preparations."
Not too hard to go back in time and see that the assembled group could be some young active entertainers.

latest snippet of information via my uncle, who has again picked out the same person (with the monkey) as the same ancestor - he says that my ancestor (who worked on the railways and lived at one of the many fenland railway gatehouses), had some small part to play with his colleagues, in the moving of a boat via rail.
This makes me wonder now whether the report on the RTYC website (still no reply from them!), that mentions a boat going round the UK to celebrate the wedding anniversary of Victoria in 1887 (which would match the jumper embroidery, the 'Albert' on the hats and my guestimate at the date of the photos) actually means that a boat did go 'round' the UK rather than 'around' the UK.
Apparently, my gt gt uncle 'knows more' about this picture.. so i'll try him next.

Hi everyone, well, ive come to a stop again. The RTYC have not responded to my email, but I think it might have had something to do with the 1887 Victoria wedding anniversary - where the boat went round the UK as a celebration. Still no idea if it went 'round the UK' or 'around the UK'.
