WOOD family, CHIPPING NORTON - missing sister ?
« on: Friday 06 July 07 12:25 BST (UK) »

I'm in the process of tracking down my g.g.g. grandfather William MARTIN (b. abt 1811) and his brother Thomas (b. abt 1805).

From a birth certificate, I know that William was married to a Mary WOOD.

In the 1861 census for Eltham Kent, we have William & Mary living with Amy MARTIN, who is a widow, and running a grocer's shop.  Both Mary and Amy are shown as being born in "Chipping, Herefordshire".  Mary is shown as "Sister to Head", and William as "brother in law", so it seems that Amy and Mary were sisters.

Now, this is where it gets tricky.  On IGI, the only Mary WOOD I can find with the right birth date is from Chipping Norton near Oxford.  I can find lots of other Woods baptised around the same time, who are probably Mary's siblings, but NO Amy.

Am I chasing the wrong Mary WOOD ?

To add to my problems, both Amy and Thomas disappear on the 1851 census, although they appear on the 1841 census.   This is very frustrating !

In 1851

Amy is wrongly transcribed as Mary and Thomas is written as Thos - to be fair the handwriting is not clear.  Amys birthplace is still given as Chipping Herts though

I have just checked and there is a Chipping in Hertfordshire, also Chipping Barnet - I am trying to work out which parish Chipping would be in - it doesn't seem to be a parish in its own right

BINGO

It appears that Chipping Hertfordshire is in the Parish of Buckland - which is in the IGI and there are baptisms for Amy Wood in 1804 and Mary Wood 1807 both daughters of Benjemin & Elizabeth Wood - so it seems that you did have the wrong Mary Wood.

Silly question, but how did you find out what parish it was in ?

I had Chipping in Hertfordshire down as a "possible" but hadn't made the Buckland connection.

Hi

I had a look in Phillimores Atlas which I have a copy of, and I could see that it wasn't a parish, so I googled Chipping Hertfordshire - which came up with this site

http://www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk/data/places/buckland.htm

I then went here

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyHertford.htm#C

for the batch numbers for Buckland - and then did a search for the surname Wood - there are quite a few other entries

Thanks very much - I'm still very much a learner in the pre-1840 searching, so all information is gratefully received.  I've made some progress based on what you found, but the IGI search engine at http://www.familysearch.org seems to have died now.

Thanks again  Smiley
