Ward family, dead end, don't know what to do now ......
« on: Saturday 16 February 08 13:10 UTC (UK) »

I don't know where to go from here.

I am searching for Margaret Ward who was born in about 1833. She came to Australia s a famine orphan in 1849, a year later she married English convict William Smedley, the had 16 children and both lived until a ripe of age.

Australian Marriage certificates in 1850 were very limited, basically just the date, their names, the place and witnesses, so the only real clue I have to Margaret's origin is her death certificate and unfortunately all it says is parents "unknown" and birthplace Tipperary.

I have been to both of these sites:
http://tipperarynorth.brsgenealogy.com/
http://tipperarysouth.brsgenealogy.com/

but the only baptism for a Margaret Ward that even comes close was in 1837 which I think unlikely that her parents would not baptise her until she was 4. Is it possible she wasn't baptised at all or is that highly unlikely in 1830's Ireland?

I had really high hopes I would find something on one of those sites and now my hopes have been dashed, I despair of ever finding out who Margaret's parents were.

thanks,
Belinda.

Hi Belinda,

Have you tried passenger lists? I'm not sure how far they go back though.

For an 1833 birth you'd be looking at church records only, since Co.Tipp civil records didn't start till 1864 (according to the "Sources" links on the two IFHF sites you mentioned).

So if the there aren't any emigration records then your only hope is the baptism record.

Assume that she was baptised - for some reason you just haven't found the record. This may sound obvious, but go back and recheck your assumptions:

Good luck!
