Hello All,
This William emigrated to NZ about 1880, and married into my Cox Familr, ie Emily Frances Cox.
I have two sets of parents for him, and would like to establish the correct set.
I have from family sources that he was a child of William Willcox, gardener, and Sarah Remmington. I like this as one of his children in NZ had Remmington as a second name.
Another source, also in NZ, has his parents as William Willcox, gardener, and Hannah.
Are Hannah and Sarah the same?
Who are his parents in 1871?
Regards, Jean

Looks like John William was illegitimate - I'll have a further look in 1861 for the couples you originally mention ..
1861 - RG9/2349; Folio: 75; Page: 19 - Woolsthorpe Wellborns Yard
John Wilcox 55 Head Ag Lab Leicestershire Elizabeth Wilcox 32 dau unamrried Dressmaker Woolsthorpe Mary Wilcox 19 dau unmarried Housekeeper do Richard Wilcox 15 son do John William Wilcox 1 Mo Grandson do
I think they are different chaps ...
Births Mar 1861 WILLCOX John William Grantham Vol 7a Page 391
Births Sep 1861 WILLCOX William Grantham Vol 7a Page 411
so if I'm right, your William wont be on the 1861 ....

In 1861, there is a William and Sarah in Woolsthorpe, an Ag Lab - no son William ( could have arrived after the census I guess).
No William and Hannah ...

Had a good dig into 1871 .... there are 3 or 4 Wil(l)cox families in the area, but no correct combination of names - and no plain William b1861-ish...
You might like to try for that Birth Cert ?
This is the only William Wil(l)cox marriage in the relevant RD - guess you've seen it ?

Hello Newfy,
Many thanks for your efforts. Yes, I am sure that the William birth registered 1861, Grantham 7a 411 is the one I am looking for. And No, I hadn't found that marriage - I obviously hadn't thought of all the different spellings for Remmington/Rimington, etc. But thanks to you I can now see it. And I am happy that this is the correct marriage as the 5th child born to William junior in NZ was named Arthur Remington Willcox. Where else would they have found this name apart from his mother's maiden name? I know we are never to assume any thing, but in this case I think it is okay. Regards, Jean
PS. Can you find this family in 1871 census? I have looked on Free Census but no luck. As William senior was a professional gardener, ( and William junior when he arrived in NZ), the family may have moved out of the Lincolnshire area . Thank you
PPS. Apparently William jnr arrived in NZ about 1880, which would make him 14 years old when he travelled. That is a little bit too young to be travelling by oneself. Perhaps I should also look for the parents coming here. Sorry to suddenly sound so vague. I know his wife's family almost inside out, and thought it would be a good idea to flesh out the other side, as it were.

PS. They are here in 1861 - RG9/2349; Folio: 74; Page: 17 - Woolsthorpe
Just realised that William is an Ag Lab at this stage - not a Gardener.
partial transcription - kids ages support the marriage date ..

ah-ha, further reinforcement ... and William jnr finally revealed ...
found them as Willson in 1871, still in Woolsthorpe !
1871 - RG10/3357; Folio: 64; Page: 6 - Woolsthorpe Towns end Road ?
William Willson/Wilcox 39 Head Waggoner Woolsthorpe Sarah Willson 43 Wife Denton Hannah Willson 11 dau Woolsthorpe William Willson 9 son do Sarah Ann Willson 5 dau do Charles Remington Willson 2 son do
Daughter Harriet in service elsewhere ...
so the Remington name confirms both the marriage and also the later use of the name you have seen .... not sure about the 'Gardener' occupation - lets try 1881 ..

Hello Newfy,
Thank you very much again for all your searching. I think William snr being a gardener may be a red herring, as the same source says his wife is Hannah.
William jnr was definitely a gardener, and collected and described plants for at least one notable NZ botanist, Leonard Cockayne. He worked at several of the government gardens around NZ - we now call them botannical gardens.
Finding the family in the different census also confirmed the childrens' names being handed down.
I will now start seriously searching at my end for his arrival in New Zealand.
Thank you for all the work you do for all Rootschatters.
Jean
