Hi all, just wondering if anybody could help me out with this one, I have a James Emslie (My 4xGrt Grandad) who apparently served as a butler at Kennethmont Hall, to Sir James Leith. He was said to have served as a batman to Sir James and upon his return to Aberdeenshire, after his military travels, James Emslie was installed as his butler circa 1800. Has anyone any ideas on how to confirm this? I do know that my James was a butler as his occupation is listed as butler on his son William's death cert in 1889, another thing there is no mothers name on this death cert, making my James a bit of a mystery. I also have Williams marriage entry 1826 in Clatt to Ann Booth, but no parents names are listed. Thanx Mat
Can't you just do an census lookup for him, if he is working as a butler then it would give the address and occupation and everything where he was working/staying at the time of the census.
yes - given that you call the hall kennethmont (as it is right nestdoor to the village) and that the Leiths are living there im presuming that its now the hall called Leith Hall? Its a national trust property and I have worked there this year. I suggest that you contact the National Trust for Scotland as they know ALL the history on these properties. I went for a guided tour round Craigivar castle this year and the guide knew everything about all the people who had ever lived there. Im sure Leith Hall could well be the same. At Craigivar there were loads and loads of portraits in every room of all the families and the guide knew the history back to the 1500s
Try it i think you might just strike lucky! have you ever been there?
Hi, thank-you Alison and Elizabeth for you replies, sorry for not answering sooner, I've had to work away for a couple of weeks. I have tried the census but with no luck, by 1840 he is not at Leith Hall. Yes i did mean Leith Hall, my mistake. I will try the National Trust avenue. No I have never been there, as I now live in Australia, and had not started my Scottish roots when I was living in England . Thanks Mat
