Mitchell - Mackie
« on: Monday 09 July 07 12:56 UTC (UK) »

Looking for any information on Maggie Mackie who married William Mitchell in 1863 in Mortlach, Banff. They had possibly 7 children who most stayed in Scotland. John born 1863 owned a hotel in Aberdeen, what happened to him. Willialm born in 1865 owned the Mason Arms in Dufftown what happened to him, Peter born in 1867, Jessie bornin 1870 James in 1873 all born in Cabrach. Anyone having any information, it would be appreciated.
William was the son of Peter Mitchell and Janet Kemp
Maggie was the daughter of William Mackie and Jane Daun.

Hi Grammatj8

Have you got some of the family's census entries:

1871- everyone showing as born in Cabrach except for Margaret:

William Mitchell 38, merchant
Margaret Mitchell 33, b. Tarland, Aberdeenshire
John Mitchell 7
William Mitchell 5
Peter Mitchell    3
Janet Mitchell    8 Mo

Address: Bridgend, Cabrach, Aberdeenshire

And in 1881, not sure if William Snr. has died, Margaret is showing as head of household:

Margaret Mitchel 43, General Merchant, b. Tarland, Aberdeenshire
John Mitchel    17
William Mitchel 15
Peter Mitchel    13
Jannet Mitchel    10
James Mitchel    7
Alexander Mitchel 5
Charles Mitchel 2
Jean MacKie 70, mother, A Kniter Of Yarn, b. Aberlour, Banffshire

Address: Bridgend, Cabrach, Aberdeenshire

And in 1891, with the older children away from home:

Margrett Mitchel 53, Merchant, b. Tarland, Aberdeenshire
Charles Mitchel 12
John Stewart    28
Jessie Stuart    20, daughter
Maggie Stuart    3 Mo

Address: Bridgend, Cabrach, Aberdeenshire

Not many Mitchells born in Cabrach. Hopefully, you should be able to trace the children on the censuses up to 1901.

Regards.

Thats great thanks.  I just noticed that Peter died in 1899.  So the 4 boys are the ones that I have to follow.  John, who owned the hotel in Aberdeen, William who owned the Mason Arms in Dufftown, James and Alexander.  I wonder where they went.
Well I will keep looking.  Thanks for your help.

Picking up on the eldest John (and brother James), before his hotel ownership days:

1891, lodging at the Kelly household:

John Mitchell    27, Commercial Trav (Spirit), b. Cabrach
James Mitchell    17, clerk, b. Cabrach

Address: 23 Thistle Str, Aberdeen Old Machar

1901, was John a carpenter before he went into the hotel business (the only John Mitchell showing born Cabrach):

John Mitchell    33, Carpenters (journeyman), b. Cabrach
Janes Mitchell    34, b. Boharm, Banffshire
Maggie Mitchell 2, b. Dufftown, Banffshire
John A Brown    24, boarder
James Donald    24, boarder

Address: 4 Squarem Mortlach, Banff

And also in 1901, and maybe it was James that started off first in the hotel business:

James Mitchell    27, innkeeper, b. Cabrach
Isabel Mitchell 33, b. Glenlivet, Banffshire
James N Mitchell 10 mo, b. Dufftown, Banffshire
Helen Morren    78, general servant, b. Dufftown, Banffshire

Address:  22 Conval Street (hotel), Mortlach, Banff

I'm out this pm. I'll pick up on the other brothers later unless someone else can do the searches.

Hopefully, the above info will let you verify it's the right Mitchell brothers through their marriage certs.

Regards.

Monica

Moving on to William, in 1891 he is lodging in a Robertson household:
'
William Mitchell, 25, busman, b. Cabrach
Address:  George Lane, Fochabers, Bellie, Moray

Can't easily see him in 1901, not sure how he may have been transcribed on the index.

Youngest brother Charles in 1901:

Charles Mitchel 22, merchant, b. Cabrach
May Rattray    25, general servant b. Cabrach
John Stewart    8, nephew, b. Cabrach

Address:  Bridgend. Cabrach

And finally, sister Janet/Jessie in 1901, everyone born in Dufftown apart from Jessie:

John Stewart    38, Distillery Worker
Jessie Stewart    29, b. Cabrach
Maggie Stewart    10
William Stewart 6
James Stewart    4
Charles Stewart 3
Peter Stewart    1

Address: 13 Conval St, Mortlach, Banff

Joanne

Realised I'd left Alexander off the entries. This looks like him in 1891, working at the Horne household:

Alexander Mitchell, 15, farm servant, b. Cabrach
Address: Tombain, Cabrach

And in 1901:

Alexander Mitchell, 24, groom, b. Cabrach
Address: Station Hotel St, Rothes, Moray

Enjoy the good weather ~ London is having a wet wet summer  (inc. hailstones the size of marbles ) Cry

There are a number of 'google' refs  to the family. For example:

www.clicktrees.com/getperson.php?personID=I1639&tree=Primary

A lot of detail on the family line although with some inaccuracies. For example, it has Jessie (Stewart) as probably dying between 1892-1901 which as you have seen from her 1901 census entry, she's alive and well in 1901 and with more children.

Sad detail about Charles's death in 1916.

thank you Monica, it really gets a jump start on that section of the family.  I will see how far we get before I scream for help.  Thanks a million.  Too bad about your wet weather, maybe we could share.  It is super dry, and hot not good for crops.

Monica, I am a little confused.  Not with what you gave me but what I have for Jessie and your 1901 census.  I'm wondering if they are the same. As there is no John Stuart with Jessie and her husband John. Let me know what you think.  Here is what I have

Jessie (Janet ) Mitchell married John Stuart June 27th 1890 in Bridgend.
John Stuart                born abt 1863
To them was born 2 children
Margaret (Maggie) Stuart        born 1891
John Stuart   was born October 12, 1892 and died December 15, 1913
John Stuart Sr’s parents names were:  John Stuart and Mary Robb.
John Stuart Sr was a blacksmith self employed until his death.
In 1901 Charles is living with nephew John Stuart, age 8 –

Hi Joanne

You might have to do some more digging to get to the bottom of it. Not sure about the 1901 entry but it's the only one coming up that connects.

In 1891 we have Jessie not long married with husband and baby Maggie living with her mother and brother Charles:

Margrett Mitchel 53, merchant, b. Tarland
Charles Mitchel 12, b. Cabrach
John Stewart    28, blacksmith, b. Mortlach, Banffshire
Jessie Stuart    20, wife, b. Cabrach
Maggie Stuart    3 Mo, b. Cabrach

Address:  Bridgend. Cabrach

In 1901 we have child John Stewart living at his Uncle Charles:

Charles Mitchel 22, merchant, b. Cabrach
May Rattray    25, general servant b. Cabrach
John Stewart    8, nephew, b. Cabrach

Address:  Bridgend. Cabrach

And then the 1901 entry which is the only one coming up for a Janet/Jessie b. Cabrach. Daughter Maggie is the right age as is husband John. His occupation is out though, as is birth place:

John Stewart    38, Distillery Worker, b. Dufftown
Jessie Stewart    29, b. Cabrach
Maggie Stewart    10
William Stewart 6
James Stewart    4
Charles Stewart 3
Peter Stewart    1

Address: 13 Conval St, Mortlach, Banff

The only relevant death coming up for Jessie/Janet on Scotlands People is this one:

1933   STEWART   JESSIE    MITCHELL  62   MORTLACH   /BANFF   162/00 0017

Regards.
