I would save your money to buy certificates!
You probably already know more than you think and you can always ask specific questions here.
None of us know everything, but we between us we know loads

Jan - I'm agreeing with Linda, especially as you mention "online courses".
The National Archives has free talks regularly as do many county record offices/archives or at a small charge - some are aimed at beginners, others very specialist, so there could be something of interest locally. Similarly some universities have what used to be called "extra-mural" classes/courses/lectures that may tie in with your research interests - these are not always based at the university - a local library may have details of what is being offerred in your area.

It also depends how old you are (I'm not prying )
I've reached an age now where a lot of the people teaching (anything I'm interested in) know less than I do!
I suspect that any 'beginners' class wouldn't tell you much you don't already know, or know how to find out. Any 'specialist' class is probably aimed at professional genealogists - and you did mention 'hobby'.
Do what the rest of us do - learn what you need as you go along

Hello Jan
When I first started researching (20 years ago) I did a 6 week evening class which I found incredibly slow and boring. Maybe I had already read too many books!
I have recently done some online courses. These typically consist of a lesson each week by email, a forum for posting answers to exercises and a weekly discussion in a chatroom. The courses vary in length according to the topic. Each lesson has lots of extra items to be explored besides the set exercises.. There is no pass or fail - you take responsibilty for your own learning.
These courses have been excellent for me. They are practical, I can work at my own pace and I can explore things in more depth if I want to.
I have chosen courses which cover the use of the less familiar family history resources eg wills, enclosure records, parish chest records. My greater knowledge and understanding of what may be available has certainly given me lots more avenues to explore in my own research.
Barbara
PS I am not sure whether I can mention the name of the company but will PM you the details if you are interested.

Thank you for that link Dawn.
The courses look really interesting. Pity I am so far away!

I find I can learn what I need myself This includes reading (with difficulty) docs in latin and in a very difficult hand.
Together with the combined knowledge of Rootschatters, that is enough for me
