I am trying to find information on John Hardley.
He fathered two children Henry William Hardley born abt 1867 and Alice Hardley born abt 1865 - in Dunedin New Zealand.  Mother unknown.  The children were taken to England and living with Naomi and Sophia Spriggs in Petersborough St Mary - Northhamptonshire as shown in the 1871 census.  Is anyone able to help in my search for John Hardley.  Huh[b][/b]

These ladies on the 1871 census are married and one is a visitor

Sophia Spriggs age 23 mar shopkeeper  born Peterborough Northamptonshire
Naomi Spriggs visitor age 21 born Grualand?? Lincolnshire mar

Naomi Lines married Edwin Charles  Spriggs 1871 March quarter Lincolnshire

John Thomas Spriggs married Sophia Holmes Foot 1869 Peterborough

Where are the Husbands? maybe with John

I have no idea where John Hardley was born.  I have applied for a birth certificate for Henry Hardley (his son) hoping that will give me further information.

Thanks for your interest Pam.

My research so far has indicated that Alice died in 1872 - Thrapston - Huntingdonshire - Northhamptonshire and in the 1881 census Henry resided at 71 Dean Street St Anne Soho London - occupation shown as messenger. I believe this to be some type of home for boys.
Your help is appreciated as the cost of birth and death certificates becomes expensive.

I am positive it is the same boy however i guess there is always the chance i could be wrong.
Thank you for giving me the name of the home.  Do you know if it was a church home. 
Can you explain to me the meaning of the numbers in the census document where it has Ed, institution or vessel.

I think ED is Enumeration District .
Institution maybe hospital workhouse ophanage?
Vessel would be ship or boat.

Hello Pam

I wanted to let you know i found John Hardley. 

Born:  Cambridgeshire England 1832 
Married:  Georgina Gamersway 1852
Emigrated: Victoria Australia 1855
Emigrated: Dunedin New Zealand about 1862
Died:  New Zealand 1868.

I now wish i knew why Alice and Henry were with Sophia Spriggs.  They returned to England with their mother in 1869. I guess after John died.  Georgina died in England 1880.

Henry returned to Australia (not sure what year) and was a Hotelier in Sydney NSW.

Have a great Christmas and New Year.
