John Murphy, Tipperary,1810
« on: Thursday 12 July 07 01:56 UTC (UK) »

I think this chap is my ggggranddpa, and from what I can gather he came from DRUMBLANE, Tipperary....he married Julia Maher, also from Drumblane around 1840. I think he was born c.1810 anf Julia 1815. They came out to Australia and settled in South Australia, around the Adelaide district. I am hoping one of his children is my gggrandpa.....any info. would be much appreciated. TIA Betty S Undecided Undecided

Hi Betty,

John Murphy and Julia Maher were my GGG Granparents and I am keen to find out what I can about them. I understand that John was a Blacksmith and Julia was a Dressmaker and that they came out from Drumblane, Tipperary around 1841 on the ship "Glenswilly" to Port Phillip and then to South Australia. I have a compiled history that was put together by a guy called Jim Johnson in 1989.

This record lists 15 children that John and Julia had including their eldest daughter Mary who I am descended from. These include the following males:
Patrick (1842) who married Eliza Spain
Edward (1848) who went to Melbourne?
James (1853) who married Eliza Kelly in Gawler, South Australia
John Joseph (1855) who married Mary Nash in Edithburgh, South Australia
Thomas (1860) who married Annie Sheehan in Rosewater, South Australia

If this looks like a match let me know and I will send you more info including John's death certificate, etc.

Best Regards,

Brian

Hi Betty,

Further to my message below, I also just noticed that John and Julia also had another son James born in 1840 (before they departed Plymouth for Australia) who must have died some time before 1853 when their second James (who married a Kelly)was born.

It also appears that Julia and John lived in New South Wales for about 5 years around the town of Maitland before moving to South Australia in 1846.

Not sure if this helps....

Thank you, Brian, for all that info.....some I have, but not all of it....
My connection is with James M 1844, who married Mary Ann Kelly...their son Francis Joseph Murphy is my grandpa.....I would like to get ANY info. about the family, as now all our close relatives are "gone to God"
I had written to GSV and they supplied a lot of info. re the family coming out to Aus.

Regards Betty S (Portland Vic)
