Hi can anybody help me please in finding out whether there was a farm called Archers in Aldenham. I ordered my great grandfather's birth certificate and it says that he was born in 1859 at Archer's Farm, Aldenham. I have tried looking on google, looking at old maps and even asking people who have lived in Aldenham all their lives if anybody has actually heard of the place but I cannot find it anywhere. If anybody has any suggestions on where I could look next it would be gratefully received. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Kayfr
I don't suppose the family still lived there 2 years later when the 1861 census was taken?
I've just looked at the description of each of the 4 enumeration districts in Aldenham in 1861 and did not come across Archers Farm
I'll trawl through the censuses later to see if it comes to light then.

Hello Kayfr
What is the family's name? Do you have them in 1861?
Would you like one of us to look for them?

Hi Kay
These are the only RUMNEYS in Aldenham in 1861. Addresses in country areas are a bit sparse and in this case, all that is given is "Round Bush" Aldenham. There is a pub in the village called the Round Bush, but areas around a local landmark often took the landmark's name and this family is definitely not living at the pub. (Not unless half the village lived there!)

Herts Parish Registers have been deposited at HALS. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24217.0.html
I have checked the BVRI and have found the following.
Joseph RUMNEY to Hannah EDMUNDS Married - 11 Oct 1840 - Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire Husband's Father: John RUMNEY Wife's Father: William EDMUNDS
Wheathampstead is very close to Sandridge where Anna/Hannah was born. The marriage date would also fit with the birth of the eldest son William. I couldn't find a baptism for Joseph Senior but I did find the following baptisms for the children of Joseph and Hannah. All at Aldenham.
James - 3 Mar 1844 George - 3 May 1846 George Joseph - 1 Aug 1847 Ann Elizabeth - 7 Oct 1849 Arthur - 18 Jan 1852 Lavinia - 13 Aug 1854 Walter John - 21 Sep 1856 Charles Henry - 19 Jul 1859 Joseph Thomas - 27 Apr 1862

Small world!
Here they are in 1851. Joseph age is definitely given as 22. This would make him 12 when he married, so I think that the enumerator must have misheard or just made a mistake.

And in 41. The 1841 census does not give relationships within families, marital status or exact place of birth. It only indicates whether or not someone was born in the census county. Adult ages are often rounded down to nearest 5.

EDMONDS Elizabeth, 50, Lace Maker RUMLEY (sic) Joseph, 20, Ag Lab RUMLEY (sic) Hannah, 20 RUMLEY (sic) Thomas, 6 months.
They were clearly both very young when they married and it would probably be well worthwhile ordering their marriage certificate if you do not already have it. It would be very interesting indeed to see how old they told the vicar they were!

Kay
I have found something interesting amongst the Herts Removal Orders. It is for an Elizabeth EDMONDS.
You will recall that an Elizabeth EDMONDS was living with Hannah & Joseph in 1841. As Hannah's maiden name was EDMUNDS, I had rather assumed that she may have been Hannah's mother. Always dangerous with the 41 to assume anything though!
Here is the Removal Order entry. If you quote this reference to HALS, they will give you a photocopy of the original order. This could well contain useful biographical information.
EDMONDS Elizabeth - Ref: D/P90/13/11 15th March 1815 FROM: St Albans (Abbey) TO Sandridge.
Singlewoman, pregant.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24217.0.html
This poor lady was clearly removed to her home parish of Sandridge before her baby was born. The parish of St Albans Abbey did not then have to pick up the tab for her confinement and the care of her child.
This could well be the baptism of this child from the BVRI.
EDMONDS Mary - Baptized 4 Jun 1815, Sandridge, Herts Mother: Elizabeth EDMONDS
Something to think about certainly. If this lady isn't Hannah's mother then she could well be a member of her extended family in Sandridge/Wheathampstead which after all were and still are, very small places.
