At least one of my ancestors was glamorous!

Fraser's confusion 1881 & 1891 in Golspie
« on: Friday 13 July 07 17:27 UTC (UK) »

Can anyone help clarify the 1881 and 1891 census as I only have access to the transcriptions on ancestry?

Oliver Fraser born 1839/40 is head of household with wife Helen.

My queries are that in 1881 the son George is 18 - I would expect him to be 8 - is this a transcription error or another George?
In 1881 they have a son Donald G who is 6 but in 1891 there is a son Donald H who is 14 - same or different Donald?

The two refs for the census are

1881 - ED:     3
Page:    1
Household schedule number:    6
Line:    18

1891 - ED:     3
Page:    4
Household schedule number:    27
Line:    1

Many thanks

Hi rose

the only way to see the actual records for Scottish census afraid is to invest in some credits at Scotland's People. The 1881 is only 1 credit as it is a trascription rather than a ciopy of the original. All others are 5 credits.

it is possible that there were 2 Donalds. It is not uncommon if a child died young for a sibling born later to have the same name. You would be able to check this at Scotlan'ds People as his death certificate would certainly be there as is post 1855.

Cheers

Ann

The 1881 census discs show George age 8 and Donald G age 4 - apart from the G it's exactly how you'd want it to be.
