Help a real beginner
« on: Saturday 11 December 04 22:50 GMT (UK) »

After writing up my family tree for a long time on reams of paper I purchased some software called Family Tree Genealogy Suite but it never seems to do what I want it to do. I'm not really experienced with any software products except Excel and Word.
I've been allocated some web space on this site but how do I go about putting details onto this space.
You've no idea how much I would appreciate it if someone could help me by explaining (in English) as I'm becoming sooooo frustrated. Everyone here seems so switched on and I feel so alone in the dark  Huh
Many Thanks
Margs (feeling very sorry for herself)

I am not sure you made the right choice with your software,  when I last looked at it there was a lot of mediore products in the box.

There are lots of pages of good advice here and over at CyndisList
http://www.cyndislist.com/construc.htm

If you think of web publishing as an extension of what you would send to a family member its a good place to start.  You just need to make sure living people are protected.

If you are just starting out on using computers I would just build a simple page detailing your interests in word and save as a HTML document to upload to the web.

Explore the Suite to see if there are any options to export web pages from the reports it produces.

There is quite a lot to learn to get your pages to the web,   but it is not complicated.

Putting a web site together is a bit like writing a book,  decide what yuou want to say, and how much information you want to upload.

Once you have decided,  if you post a few details of what you want to achieve come back for some help on getting the pages on to the web space

As jane has said Microsoft's Word is capable of saving some basic pages as HTML. for publication on a web site.

http://www.w3schools.com/ is a good site for anyone who wants to learn more about the various aspects of web construction and design. as is

Hi margs,
I use software Family Tree Maker 2005 by genealogy.com.  It seems to fit my needs fairly well. I have used version 10 and 11 and am expecting 2005, just upgraded to be even better.  You might want to ask others on the chat room or by postings, their opinions of it.  Compare them to what else you find on cindislist. And go from there.  If you want any specifics on FTW please send me an email and I could meet you on the chat room and discuss it.

Many thanks Falkyrn, they are interesting sites. Instead of worrying about things, I'll just have to have a go!

Thank you Tallted for your offer. I've never been to a chat room before - another new experience. This geneology has certainly broadened my horizons and I must say that people on the Rootschat are very, very helpful.
