Hi again Scrappyshaz
I'm interested in this family because I have some Landers who came from Albourne and Twineham, I wonder whether we have a connection as that's not that far from Brighton?
I have a William Lander born 1785 in Albourne whose children were: John, Elizabeth, Henry, Mary, Frances and Ann all born 1812 and 1824.
Do you know anything about David's parents?

Wow Kerry - that was FASSSSST!!! Thanks thats a great help. I didn't find my Angelina with the family so will have to keep looking for her. If you notice her in Sussex she was Angelina Cross BURFORD b 1851 Bury St Edmunds Sussex, married to a Richard HUTCHINSON - but probably separated. She was with the Landers children in 1901 at 1 Black rock Cottage - so hoped to find her there in 1891 Such is life!! Thanks again for your superfast response, scrappyshaz

Never mind, I'm sure David must fit in somewhere.
Just had a quick look for Angelina, she's not showing herself! Can I just clarify was she born in Bury, Sussex or Bury St Edmunds, Essex?

Hi Kerry It may help to know that I have done the Lander family tree for a friend of mine (Victor Lander) and the Black Rock Cottage lot do relate back to Albourne & Hurstpierpoint.
Below is a section from my Notes
Roy Grant **********
Known Family John Lander of Hurstpierpoint / Albourne (born c1810) married Sarah Patching from Hurstpierpoint/Albourne, Producing Thomas bapt 18 May 1834, Albourne), 1851 lodging with Moppet family in Rottingdean? No trace 1881 Joseph bapt 6 March 1836 Albourne, married Lucy Moppet Dec 1861 Address 1881 4 Black Rock Cottages Children shown later Richard bapt 1838, Rottingdean. Married Ann (b c1841) from Littlehampton Address 1881 7 Cumberland Place Brighton David b 1840 Rottingdean Married Harriet ? of Eastdean Children: Mary Jane bapt St Nicholas Brighton 1864, Thomas, Harriet, George & Alice Bertha bapt St Peter Brighton 25 May 1879 Address 1881 2 Black Rock Cottages John bapt 1844 Rottingdean, No trace 1881 Charles bapt 1846, Rottingdean.. Married Lydia Cox aged 22, Rottingdean 15 Nov 1875. Children Martha, Jane & Louisa Address 1881 9 Black Rock Cottages Jemima bapt 16 March 1850 Rottingdean, Married Thomas John Cole, St Peters Brighton 27 Dec 1874 1881 census 17 Rankin Street London RG11 0062/42 page 24 Thomas Cole Painter age 30 born Sussex Jemima Cole wife age 30 born Sussex Thomas J Cole son age 5 born Sussex Notes The baptisms suggest that the Lander family must have moved to Rottingdean between 1838 – 1840. Futhermore, Joseph may not have cared whether he was born in Albourne or Rottingdean and just told the census enumerator the first thing that came into his head.
Joseph above (born c1836) married Lucy Moppet Dec 1861 Side note. Lucy Moppet was an illegitimate child and at birth was given her mother’s maiden surname. Although her parents married within weeks of that birth, her baptism certificate also has her as Lucy Moppett. In later documents however, she takes her mother’s new husband’s surname and becomes known as Lucy Hide. John Hide (Lucy’s presumed father) is named as her father on the above marriage certificate The couple produced John Thomas bapt Rottingdean 17 May 1863 Address 1881 4 Black Rock Cottages Joseph Richard bapt Rottingdean 1865 (M 1883?) Address 1881 4 Black Rock Cottages Amelia bapt born March ¼ 1868 baptised Rottingdean 1868 Charles Frederic bapt Rottingdean 1870 b June ¼ 1870 Address 1881 4 Black Rock Cottages
John above (born Rottingdean 1863) married twice. His first wife was Emily Eason (m Rottingdean June ¼ 1885) Emily was born circa 1862 and bapt St Nicholas, Brighton Sept 1862 It is believed she was the daughter of William & Susan Eason. She died in 1889) The couple produced Percy’s half brothers and sister Arthur born c1885 Brighton Daisy born c1886 Brighton Joseph Charles born c1890 Brighton (b March ¼ 1889?) John’s second wife who he married in Brighton (June ¼ 1893) was Frances (Fanny) Harriett Vine of Brighton, born circa 1864 and baptised August 1865. She was the daughter of Edwin & Mary of 11 Black Rock Cottages, Rottingdean (1881) The couple produced Percy on 29 December 1893

Hi scrapppyshaz
It looks like David's wife died quite early on perhaps she and David were 'together' for a while and perhaps she describes herself as widow because of his death not her husbands!!

Angelina was in London with her husband Richard in 1881 giving her birthplace as Mildenhall, Suffolk. She had downsised her age by about 4 years. RG11 /0055 / 88 / 47. Presumably any relationship with David or his family must have been after that date and none of the children could have been hers. David (b 23 Feb 1840 Rottingdean) Married Harriet Thorpe of Eastdean June ¼ 1860 (Harriet died aged 42, June ¼ 1883) Children: Joseph Richard bapt 19 May 1861 Married Mary b Rottingdean 1861 Children Sarah A b 1885 William b 1890 Mabel b 1894 Mary Jane bapt St Nicholas Brighton 1864, Thomas, b 1866 David b 1871 George b 1873 Alice Bertha Born March ¼ 1879 bapt St Peter Brighton 25 May 1879 Address 1881 2 Black Rock Cottages Walter . As his wife died in 1884

It went before I could finish so I continue......
As his wife died in 1883, the 1891 census should be revealing. Can someone look it up. Roy G

The 1901 has David Lander on it, so he was still alive then, but not recorded with his family. Do you think he was working the night shift at the gas works and although the children were in the care of their elder sister in their father's house, the enumerator's record has led you to believe Angelina was acting as their mother in his absence?

1891 is the one I looked up right back at the top of this message. But Angelina is not there, presumably still with her husband?
