1901 look-up please - Swindon
« on: Sunday 15 July 07 20:42 BST (UK) »

Hi there.  Long shot I know, is anyone able to tell me who was living at 8 Highworth Road, Swindon, at the time of the 1901 census?
Many thanks.

Hi Leigh

Would be easier if you said who you are looking or as have tried the 1901 census using address search and Highworth Road Swindon dont come up, and there are nearly 40 districts to search through Wink

Undecided I don't have access to the 1901 census, but if anyone is able to there may be a Highworth Road under the district of Stratton St Margaret in Wiltshire.

Thank you both for replying.
It is indeed Stratton St Margaret - sorry for omitting that.  My grandmother - Ivy Violet Davenport -was born at 8 Highworth Road on 19 April 1911.  Her mother was Gertrude Mary Davenport whose given address was 22 Beatrice Street, Swindon.  No father was listed for Ivy Violet and she was adopted in infancy.
I am curious as to why Gertrude gave birth at Highworth Road - perhaps a relative or even a type of home/hospital?  1901 census shows Gertrude (aged 23) and her family at 22 Beatrice Street but her mother has remarried and the family all have the name Bromley.  Cheryle kindly got me on the right track last year but I have not pursued this branch since then.  However, every now and then I get niggled about not knowing Ivy's real father and start looking over my notes again.  I know it's unlikely that I will ever find out but you know how it is .......!
Thanks again.

Hi Leigh

Just had a quick look along Highworth Road, No Davenports on there and most of the property  look like normal houses, and the odd farm house

Thank you again for your trouble Ricky.  Did you notice any Bromleys (Gertrude's stepfather's family), Lamberts (her mother's family) or Wheelers (the family that adopted Ivy)?  If not, I fear I will have to call it a day.
Regards

Hello Leigh

I don't know if you already have this information, but I will send it anyway.  I have been doing a bit of routing around and a friend of mine in their sixties grew up in Stratton St Margaret.  On Highworth Road there was until about 2003 an old peoples hospital, I actually visited someone there quite a while ago.  I asked my friend if they remembered what was the building prior to this hospital and without hesitation they said "a workhouse".

http://www.workhouses.org.uk:80/

Click on Poor Law, Poor Law Unions, Workhouse Locations, English Poor Law Unions and then Highworth and Swindon and then scroll down, and hey presto!

On this website it mentions birth records etc so if you know of anyone that could look at records at the Wiltshire Record Office you may find your Ivy Violet Davenport listed there.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you Ewan.  What a great website!  I remember looking at this ages ago (could have been years) guessing that Ivy's mother may have been in a work/poor house but that was before I even knew her real name.  I am contacting the records office now.
Thanks again.  Cheesy

Just to let you know, I got in touch with the Swindon records office - they were so helpful.  Ivy (my grandmother) was indeed born in the "poor house" and they sent me a copy of the entry for her mother's arrival and departure from Highworth.

Even more amazing, they found an earlier entry for 1905 showing that her mother gave birth to another girl (also out of wedlock).  From this I was able to trace her birth registration - Alice Maud Davenport.

Of course, as with Ivy it is highly unlikely I will ever find out who the father(s) were.  The Registrar of the time had written on Ivy's birth certificate that she was adopted (although not the name of the couple) so I may send for Alice Maud's just to see if there is any such note.  It makes me quite sad that Ivy never knew she had an older sister but I know she had a wonderful home with her adoptive parents.  It just makes me curious to know whether my father may have had a string of cousins by his unknown aunt!

Thanks again for all your help.

Hello Leigh

Thanks for letting us know the outcome, glad you found out some more about Ivy and to find out that she had an older sister was a bit of a bonus.
