http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demi-cannon - mentions the existence of an HMS James, although it seems to have been a little earlier (there are some indications of the HMS James on the NA site which suggests a ship of this name did exist, but again, they're all too early for yours). There was also an HMS Atlantic around at various times.
What was his father's occupation, do you know? I'd expect him to be linked to the military somehow or other.

It's quite possible that as a joiner he worked in connection with the navy, for example working at the Naval Dockyards. I see there was a family connection to Yorkshire, as James Atlantic Greaves was christened there and is living in Sheffield in 1861; are these possibly the parents in 1841?
HO 107/1329/1 49/11 Nursery Lane, Sheffield William Greaves, 50, b. in county, joiner Catherine, 40, born Ireland Martha, 14, b. in county Owen, 12, b. in county
Do you have a copy of the original christening of James Atlantic Greaves and is his father's occupation listed there? Or is the occupation only taken from the marriage certificate?
