I have 2 DOUGLAS families in kirkcudbrightshire in 1841 but they are not on 1851 I wonder is there any chance of finding them with this  info from
1841 Carswell Kirkb
Thomas Douglas age 35
Mary Douglas age 30
John Douglas age 13
Mary Douglas age 9
Margaret Douglas age 7
Jane Douglas age 4
Elizabeth age 2
Thomas age 1 mth.

2.the Lodge Kelton Kirkb
Robert Douglas age 75
David Douglas age 34
Jannet Douglas age 33
Mary Douglas age 10
Margaret Douglas age 8
Henrietta Douglas age 5

I suppose they could be anywhere

Nothing else seems to match at all. I can't find anything so far on the second family.

thanks so much for trying I am determined to find Mary Douglas one way or another I found 22  Mary Douglases in all Scotland age 7-10 in 1841 and I am going through them one by one I have been looking for over 20 years and I wont give up I know where she was in 1853 she was married? to my G.Grandfather John Sewell and had a son in June 1853. I need all the help I can get

There aren't any marriages in Scotland for the pair that I can see Sad

I assume that you checked  Mar Q, 1853, Carlisle, Vol 10b, Page 425 but no match for Mary  Sad  Could she have been married before and used that name  Undecided

I had considered a previous marriage for Mary Douglas although she would of been very young but grand children and great grandchildren have used Douglas as a first or second name right up till now, all birth certs for her children say formally Douglas as do death certs for her and John Sewell he died 1887  I am faced with the same trouble for John Sewell ,cant find him be for 1851 where he is a single lodger age 27. thought I had John Sewell last week b 1826 Shirehead Lancs  but it turned out to be the wrong one yet again

I think that I've been following your trail but can't see anything that jumps out. There are a couple of Mary Douglases in Dumfriesshire on the 1851 and there's a marriage of a John Sewell in Carlisle, Jun q, 1851. There is a Mary Lawson on the same page - but I can't find a Mary Douglas marrying a Lawson before then  Sad

Douglas is more a border name than anything but  Undecided

I'll keep looking and thinking and,  if I come up with anything, I'll get back.

Mary Douglas could not write ,she was using an X on birth certs for all children 1853-1870. I was surprised she made no effort to even learn to write her name  over 17 years, one thing she was consistant with was her age more than John Sewell was , he was 27 years old in 1851.  when he died December 1887 he was 58 .I will find these two one day.I have been to Scotland & Carlisle many times in the past and found nothing . I found both their graves,& placed flowers there  both buried paupers sad really
