James SANDFORD - Professional Low Comedian
« on: Monday 16 July 07 16:09 UTC (UK) »

Hi

One of my ancestors James Sandford born Newcastle upon Tyne approx 1843-1845.

I have a copy of his marriage certificate.

He married 08/07/1867 to Margaret Archer both were age 23.

James` occupation was given as PROFESSIONAL LOW COMEDIAN

His father was James McClay Sandford Solicitor.

Place of marriage was Newcastle Upon Tyne

Despite the fact that I found his wife and children on several census records the only record I found for him was 1881.
RG11 Folio 66 Page 11

Living at 5 Pink Lane as Boarder Occ Comedian. Age 33

This address was I believe within walking distance to The Tyne Theatre.
I also think this was him on site THEATRE-UK
NORTHERN BORDERS REGION
Age 33 Comedian.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jassie/theatre/nborders/index-page10.htm
After this he vanishes. He never returns to his family who settled in Liverpool.
Any ideas.
Hope web address works entered as seen on bottom of my record.

Hi Victoria,

Your James, certainly is proving to be elusive Tongue

I was wondering if there was an address of where he was living on his marriage cert and the names of the witnesses.

A trade of professional comedian was certainly a very different trade to what he says his father was.  It is of course possible that some of the fathers details are fictious, I have to say that I am intrigued at the middle name tho'.

Have you found Margaret on the 1871 census?

Sorry just questions Smiley

Hi again,

Do you have the birth cert for any of the children of James and Margaret?  Sorry there I go with questions again Tongue

I ask, because as mentioned earlier I am intrigued by James senior's middle name of McClay, it immediately brings to mind illegitimacy; anyway was looking up the children, cannot at the moment find Charles, but I am sure I have found Phoebe and Mary A.

I am sure that Phoebe is listed on June 1873, reg dist Cheltenham as Phoebe Shenton S McClay and Mary is listed in June 1875, reg dist Sheffield as Mary Alice S McClay.  Whats the odds that the S in both their names is Sandford.

Also there is a birth for a Emma Sandford McClay in June 1880, reg dist Wigan, but as, this child is not on the 1881 census, either she isn't their's or she had sadly died.

Hi Kath,

First of all I would like to say that I only found your reply by accident, ( was looking at other reply ) ? have checked spam box, not there )

Have only got birth certs for Pheobe. and Helena

Born 02/05/1873 Cheltenham Gloucester.
Name as documented.
Pheobe Shenton Sandford

Father James SAndford McClay Comedian.

Mother Margaret Sandford McClay formerely Archer

Home address 2 Queens Terrace Cheltenham.

1882 Mount Pleasant Liverpool Workhouse.

Helena Sandford 13/07/1882

Father James Sandford Actor

Mother Margaret Sandford

Home Address 40 Gt Richmond Street Liverpool

I could not find Charles as being born Liverpool there was a record right year born Newcastle Upon Tyne ?? wondered about this ??
Mary Alice is correct record she is called Alice 1891 census Liverpool.
Emma unfortunately died Wigan approx 3 months old

James and Margaret BOTH living at Hanover Square at time of marriage. Archers at No 7.
HAY,J.Porter, and Archer and Stamp, Coffe Roasters

One of the witnesses William Cossar I found ? 1861 living at Silver Street ( cant find in my notes ) back of All Saints Church he was a french polisher.

The other witness at wedding was Isabella Oliver who was the sister of Margaret Archer.

Have not found Margaret 1871 census, ?? could she be using surname McClay ?? dont have sub with Ancestry.

I too thought fathers name and profession was ficticious, but if so how was the name McClay involved with births etc.

Hi Victoria,

Great to have the names confirmed, although it means checking 2 sets of surnames with variants on the censuses.

My 'instinct' is that the fathers name is real, but wonder if James (Jnr) was born illegitimately and one of these names is his mothers surname or the same case but for James (Snr).

Of course this could be the father's real names and one of them is a grandmothers maiden name etc, as has happened with some of my ancestors (this normally makes it easier to find them though!)

Have searched for combinations of McClay and Sandford but to no avail, also looked for combinations with Shenton (Phoebe), again to no avail.

Ah well, I will keep trying the censuses.

Regards,
Kath
