Finding a birthplace
« on: Tuesday 17 July 07 11:23 BST (UK) »

Hi

My grandmother was born on a farm in Layham, Suffolk.  It is either Stackwood, or Slackwood, or could even be Stockwood Farm, it is a bit unclear on the birth cert.

How can I find out where this farm is or was?  I don't live in the area.

Thankyou

Anne

usually i look on either multimaps or aa route planner (maps link) to see the area sometimes places still exist, i see there is a Stock Road in Layham so it could possibly be Stockwood Farm
if the place no longer exists then i don't know sorry
an ordance survey map may be your answer

Stack Wood is in the adjacent parish of Polstead.

And there is a Stackwood Road in Postead.

Have you checked out www.old-maps.co.uk

Many farms change names over the years.

...... and yes, I do live in the area and have a friend in Stackwood Road, I used to live in Lower Raydon - right next to Lower Layham (which is next to Upper Layham ).   Grin
