I thought that some of you might be interested in this 'monument' that is just outside Creetown. 

I have quite a few more photos that I took on my recent trip but most of them are of personal ancestral places.

Hi Gadget,
Nice photo -- we've just this week found out that my husband's grandfather was born in Creetown, and that HIS father was a stoneworker there.  His occupation is listed different ways throughout different year census records and so forth -- quarryman, stone dresser, pavement cutter -- but we can't quite decipher is occupation on the grandfather's wedding certificate.  It appears to be granite settmaker.  Is that an occupation you've heard of, or do you have a suggestion for a similar occupation that it might be?
And you mention that you have other photos of the area.  Would you happen to have one of Barnkirk, Penninghame?  GGrandparents were married there in 1863, "after banns according to the forms of the established Church of Scotland"

I'm not well up in granite terms but certainly I've heard of granite setts. These are blocks of granite which are cut for various uses - building blocks, if you like.

Sorry, I've no photos of Peninghame - just ones around Creetown and Kirkmabreck, some more easterly KKD parishes and Portpatrick.
