Hi Cass,
There is a entry on FreeBMD for his marriage
Dec Q 1906 Cockermouth, Cumberland John Ousby Whitfield and Annie Pearson
so with that in mind this is the most likely 1901 census for him
409 Woods Terrace, Workington, Cumberland
James Whitfield Head M 64yrs Labourer b. Whitehaven, Cumberland Mary A Whitfield Wife M 62yrs b. Whitehaven, Cumberland John Whitfield Son U 29yrs Labourer b. Harrington, Cumberland

Well that certainly does seem to make the census entry more likely, as he is born in Harrington.
So: born - Harrington, lived with parents - Workington, Married - likely Workington but at least the Cockermouth reg district, and kids in the Cockermouth Reg district
Hope that sorts some stuff out for you Cass

Hi Cass
I will send the details as promised.
You have to search in the Complete GRO indexes which are available free of charge on the Ancestry site. You will have to register with your name and email address if you have not already done so.
Here is the link
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx
You can look through each quarter one by one until you find what you are looking for. Give it a try (for practice) with the information that I will PM to you and see if you can find them. Once you get used to it you will be able to search for any possible children from the two marriages.
Geoff
Your link to FreeBMD does not work. I had similar problems with this until very recently when Newfy explained what we were doing wrong.

The “www.” needs to be deleted from the link. The last bit is not needed either.

Hello again Cass
I have just checked (using another unsubscribed identity) on Ancestry and you are correct that the complete indexes do not seem to be available free of charge at the moment.
I am not sure whether this is going to be a permanent thing or if it is just a temporary “blip” whilst some maintenance work is being carried out.
