Isaacs Family Wincanton
« on: Friday 20 July 07 12:42 UTC (UK) »

Hi there,

Does anybody out there have any information regarding the Isaacs Family who travelled around Somerset and Dorset eventually settling in Wincanton.  James Isaacs married Trinity Hicks in 1844 and they had approximately 15 children.  I am the descendant of Annie (Analetta) Isaacs who married Albert Camfield.  Lousie Isaacs married Job Camfield and Deliah Isaacs married John Fry of Cucklington and Alice married Mark Fry and Mary Ann married Henry Hicks.  I would love to get in contact with any other Isaacs descendants.  I understand that Henry Hicks went to Canada and has descendants there.    I would also like to know if anyone has any information as to where James Isaacs came from originally.  Also any information regarding the Hicks travelling family would be gratefully received.

Do you have James and family in 1861?

RG9/1324 Folio 84 Page 6
Vans, Gillingham, Wiltshire

James Isaacs 38 Licensed Hawker All born Dorset Marnel?
Trinity 36 Licensed Hawker
Henery 16 Licensed Hawker
Jane 14 Licensed Hawker
Allace 12
Delia 10
John 8
Mary 6
Betsey 4
Lewesa 3
Victoria 1
Anna 4mo
Henery Isaacs brother 36 Licensed Hawker
Harriet 30
James 3?
Caraline 4
Ellen 2

Could "Marnel" be Marnhull, Dorset? In 1851 theres an Edward Isaacs, age 29 Matmaker b. Dorsetshire Marnhull, a prisoner  in North Street County Prison, Lewes, Sussex. Brother of James and Henery maybe? HO107/1643 Folio 482 Page 61

Hi Cat One,

Thanks for the post.  I do have that 1861 census information for them but I haven't got the Edward Isaacs info.  It does seem quite likely that it is a brother.  It gives me another line of enquiry.

Many thanks.

Have you seen this one in 1851?

Henry Isaac 65/8? Tinman Dorset Marnel
Harriett 64 Sussex Hastings

HO107/1657 Folio 228 Page 29
Stanshan? Kingston, Portsea, Hampshire

In Doulting, Somerset, 1871 census, theres also a Matthew Isaac (+ family), Hawker, b.c1835 Dorset Marnhull, so seems Marnhull, Dorset produced quite a few Isaac/s travellers.....

I hadn't seen the Henry Isaac 1851 Tinman.  That fits in with James Isaacs father who is Edward Isaacs and his occupation was given as a tin plate worker.  I was not sure whether that occupation term would refer to somebody working in a tin plate works or the more itinerant tin plate worker that are the occupations of some gypsies/romanies.  My James Isaacs was born in Broad Hinton but I have come across Marnhull quite a lot and it is fairly near Wincanton.

I've seen the Matthew census and I'm fairly sure he's probably James's brother.  I would dearly love to track down Edward Isaacs but I haven't managed to find him on a census yet.

Thanks for the help again.

Thanks for that.  I was particularly excited by Jane Isaac being from Silchester which is very close to where many of the Hicks family come from in Berkshire.  I'm wondering whether she might indeed be a Hicks.  The Isaac/Isaacs are very missing from 1841 census.  I suppose that the Harriet mentioned could be the Harriet that is mentioned on the 1861 census in Gillingham.  I guess that Henry could have taken the name of Isaacs which was common amongst travelling families.  I have as yet been unable to find the Huston or Croiton place names.  I think I shall have to try a little lateral thinking to decipher them.  Another evening looking at a road atlas!  Thanks for the help.

Yes I think Henry/Harriet are the ones in Gillingham in 1861. Here he and Harriet are on the same page as Jane in 1871 -

RG10/2440 Folio 43 Page 2
Pecking? Mill, Evercreech, Somerset

Henry Isaacs 43 Wooton Basset? Berkshire
Harriet 43 Lacock? Wiltshire
James 20 Hawker Piddlehinton, Dorsetshire
Caroline 14 Wantage Berkshire
Ellen 10 Scholar Woolampton, Berkshire
Thomas 7 Scholar Mear, Dorsetshire
John 5 Scholar Frome Somersetshire
Edward 3 Evercreech, Somersetshire

Then, after the next household on the page, is -
Jane Isaacs w 77 Hawker Silchester, Berkshire

Hi CatOne

I'm trying to get my head around all this and work it all out.  It would seem that Jane Isaacs's age has been mistranscribed in the 1881 census and should read 86.  It clearly is the right lot though.

I inadvertently gave you the wrong name of James Isaacs's father - it is Thomas not Edward.  Still no luck finding evidence of Thomas though.  I've found a couple of possibilities of a marriage on the IGI.   A Thomas Isaac married a Jane Mills on 29 Dec 1817.  There is also a christening of a Henry Isaacs on 26 March 1826 in Little Somerford Wiltshire which is a possibility for Henry being a brother of James if all the rest is correct.  But.... as I'm sure you know it is all rather supposition without further fact and evidence.

I appreciate all your thoughts and assistance.
