Good Evening,
Was wondering if anybody could offer any help.
I've just ordered the birth certificate of my Great, great grandmother Sarah Alexander (b1866), in order to identify her mother's surname.
The certificate quite clearly states her mother as 'Elizabeth Alexander formerly Jude'. On the census returns of 1851, 1871 and 1891, they state:
Elizabeth Alexander, born 1830 (1826 on 1851 Census), Keswick, Cumberland.
However, I can find no record of her on the 1841 and 1861 returns.
Can anyone see what I'm missing???!!!
Regards
Paul

Hi Tati,
Certainly, the 1851 Census Reference is...
Class: HO107 Piece 2186 Folio 787 Page 23
Elizabeth's husband was William Alexander. Know no more though! He must have died or been absent as he's not on any of the census returns. He was a Painter (Journeyman) by trade, if this helps? He's listed as Sarah's father on an IGI search. along with Elizabeth.
Thanks
Paul

Evening,
There's something not right about that 1851 Census.
According to the 1871 Census, John was born in 1863, plus it has Sarah (My GG Grandmother) as a 5 year old (1866 birth), which is correct. It also classes Elizabeth as a widow.
It is on Sarah's 1866 birth certificate that William is working as a Painter. So William died at some point in between.
This also ties in with the 1891 Census where Elizabeth is then living with Sarah and her own family, just 3 years before the birth of my Great grandmother in 1894.
I could always scan and post a portion of the birth cert showing her maiden name?

Oh, so the John Alexander born in 1850 may well have been a first child who died young?
Hmm, that still leaves a 13 year gap between children. Interesting!

Evening,
I'm still struggling to find any real info other than the census returns discussed above. I'm therefore posting a segment of Sarah Alexander's birth certificate. To me, it most certainly looks like it reads:
'Elizabeth Alexander, formerly Jude'
However, I can find no trace of an Elizabeth Jude anywhere on an 1841 Census! All I have found so far is a potential entry in the death index for an Elizabeth Alexander in 1893.
Any ideas?
Paul
