Hiya Rick,

I was going to ask why you chose the Donegal board until I checked your other posts and saw there are identical messages on the boards of seven of the nine counties of Ulster. It could be a lengthy search ... I've spotted one Archive that has an Irish Parish Records Collection, 1671-1900 contained on forty one reels of microfilm. This collection is at the Maritime History Archive which is located in the Henrietta Harvey (Mathematics) building on the campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. It consists of microfilm copies of many Roman Catholic parishes in the counties of Kerry, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford and Donegal, as well as many Church of Ireland parishes in counties Cork and Waterford. There are also vestry books for two parishes in County Clare: Castletown Arra and Killaloe. The main concentration is from 1750 to 1880.

There's an additional problem ... as well as the possibility of searching through a large number of reels of microfilm the Roman Catholic registers are kept in the individual parishes and, in most cases, were not deposited in national repositories. This could be one real headache ... the Parish Registers are difficult to decipher, there's no standardisation of names and addresses and, more than that, they're all over the place as the names were entered on a chronological basis. That's not the least of the problems ... there's the small matter of the difficulty of finding a complete family as they tended to move between parishes and counties.

There are microfilms of Parish Records held at the National Library of Ireland. Most are freely available for researchers to view although there are a couple of instances where permission to view is required from the Bishop of the Diocese ... this applies in the Dioceses of Cashel & Emly and Kerry.

Click here for the current index to the Church of Ireland records that have been microfilmed by the Public Record Office in Belfast

By the way, what denomination are the Irvin or Irwin family Huh

hi Christopher,
thanks for the reply. Andrew's religion was presbyterian.
yeah, i posted this message in a few places cause i originally thought
he was born in derry, but the researcher i hired coulnt find a thing.
the only other doc i found here in the states is his death record, which lists his parents first initals.
F. IRVIN - Father
H. IRVIN - Mother
i think the name Francis was popular back then, but i don't know.

A few more posts arrived on the Derry (Londonderry) board despite my pointer to this board.

We haven't a townland ... it might be an idea to attempt to establish one. Andrew was born in 1782 so lets say his Da was born in the late 1750s to early 1760s and his Grand Da was probably born in the 1730s. That's just a rough guide. It would do no harm at the moment to assume that Andrew had some relatives, possibly siblings, who remained in Ireland so a look at the extracts of Griffiths Valuations 1848 to 1864 may help find that townland.
Did Andrew and Sarah have any children ... if so what were their names Huh

nope, i wish, just a page from a ohio history book stating;
"he came from Londonderry, Ireland"
which can mean a few things, born there, lived there, or took to a ship from port derry to the usa.

Most likely sailed from Derry but probably lived in the north west counties.

Distribution of the Irwin surname at the time of the Valuations ....

Antrim 105
Armagh 130
Derry 117
Donegal 64
Down 133
Armagh 106
Tyrone 224
