Where do I go now?
« on: Wednesday 25 November 09 13:09 UTC (UK) »

Hi
Can anyone advise please how and where I would start to look for a death after 1911 in County Mayo.
I may have found my elusive great grandmother alive and well living with her brother in law by marriage in 1911 in Ireland after disappearing from the family home in Bolton Lancashire.
In 1911 a Catherine Quinn was 50 years old and living in Shanvaghera township, North Knock with a 52 year old widower I know to be a relation of her husband back in England. I need to get hold of this lady's death certificate which will hopefully confirm my suspicions or eliminate her from my search. The worse case scenario is that it doesn't get me any further forward, but I've been there before and can take it on the chin!
I've searched County Mayo records for her death but there are few records after 1920 and she is not appearing there.
I've also found out that I can request a 5 year search but that is £35, so potentially a spend of over £100 so before I go down that route I thought I'd ask the experts if there is any more searching I can do myself.
Thanks
Paula
PS After 4 years looking I am 99.9% sure my great grandma did not die in England.

you can search the Irish civil index on familysearch at : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347

This index covers BMDs up to 1958. Certs can be ordered from the GRO using the index details (name, registration district, year/quarter, volume & page). The website is : www.groireland.ie

A death cert though may not always help you establish relationship details as it will only include basic details :

  date & place of death
name, age & occupation of deceased (sometimes husbands occ. for wives/widows )
  cause of death
informant and address (this can be a medical professional, or sometime s a family member)

thanks for your advice Shane - at least I have a starting point. I realise it's a long shot but what isn't on the certificate may help a bit
Thanks again  Smiley
