Where are the Maycock's
« on: Wednesday 25 July 07 19:57 BST (UK) »

Can someone help me to find my grandparents William and Lucy  Maycock. William was born in 1876 and Lucy (nee Bowers) in 1892.  They were married in 1916 in Ramsey and the wedding certificate was witnessed by Arthur Bedford and Lily Bedford. I have been unable to find any trace of any of these people, or Lucy's twin brother Fred Bowers.

There is a William Maycock, son of Samuel and Elizabeth, in the 1881 and 1891 censuses, born and living in Ramsey.

Does this sound like your grandad?

Hi Mike
Yes that's him. I know he was still around in 1916 but it's after this date that  I completely lose trace.

If you tell us who their fathers were, who will be named on the marriage cert, we might be able to find them in censuses

Or are you looking for them since 1916, rather than going back in time?

You say on an earlier posting that he was a soldier. Have you checked on the CWGC site to see if he was killed in the war?

Do you have the birth cert of your father/mother, which will show where they were living at that time. Were there any uncles/aunts on this side of your family?

Jessie, Lucy and Fred were part of a large family living in Sutton St James, Lincs in 1901. Do you have these details?

Hello Tibby,  There was a Arthur Bedford age 6 born Ramsey on 1901 census.

Do you know where your parents were born ? & when ? - might help us pinpoint your grandparents.

Hi John.
Who did Jessie Bowers marry ?  I wonder if the  both families were living together in Ramsey and then set off for distant shores ?

Don,   I was suggesting it was Arthur Bedford as they are on the same marriage index page that is on FreeBMD.  John

Hi John
My mother was born  Holbeach 1911, which was before Lucy and William married. On mothers birth certificate no father is shown although she was given a second christian name of Maycock. Lucy was shown as a domestic servant (general) and living at Bell End , Whaplode.  Lucy was still a teenager while William would have been 35, so I should think there would have been a bit of scandal, which could be why they eventually married 5 years later in William's home town (Ramsey) and no family member signed the wedding certificate.

The mystery continues. Arthur S Bedford married in 1914 (Oct Nov Dec) and his spouse was a BOWERS !! Where did she come from ? I have some details of the large family living in Sutton St James but she is not included in my list.
I believe the Maycock killed in WW1 was a brother of William.  I can find no trace of William being a fatility in the war.

John pointed out twice last night that Arthur Bedford appears to have married Jessie Bowers.

Jessie was the younger sister of Lucy and Fred. She appears in the family in 1901 aged 6.

Do you have the full 1901 census listing? If not I'll post it - all 10 children!
