Class: RG13/ Piece: 5290/ Folio: 12/Page: 16.

*Ancestry have transcribed this as Pattie, but I don't think it's that.  The age is definitely recorded as 27, but if this is Samuel's sister Martha - and perhaps she was called 'Mattie' by her family, she would be 17. *

I can see you like to be cautious, Alex, but this is the best match I can find.



* 29/07/07 - It's been niggling at me since I posted this. Of course Martha, who was 7 in 1881 would be 27 in 1901!

Well done, Gallium! Even with my caution I think you are right and you have found Helen. Samuel certainly moved about the country and was versatile in his work, now moving away from boat building. Now for Roxburghshire and Helen's parents!

I have now found Helen's parents in Roxburghshire. Her father was Robert Rutherford born Maxton in 1829 and a farm bailiff; and her mother was Margaret Storie. Her grandparents were Robert Rutherford and Elizabeth OIiver; and William and Agnes Storie all from Roxburghshire.
The mystery of Sedbergh was solved when I discovered that Helen's sister Margaret married John Punch from Sedbergh.
Thanks to all, especially Gallium.
Completed now.

The Sedbergh records show the following transcription for this marriage:-

Oct 29th 1895
Samual Clucas Ward aged 28, Bachelor, Boatbuilder
son of John Henry Ward, Boatbuilder

Helen Rutherford, aged 19, spinster,
dau of Robert Rutherford, Farm Steward

no place of residence on the transcription I'm afraid.

there is a Helen Rutherford aged 5 on the 1881 census born Scotlandwith a father Robert a farm baliff which ties in with other findings.

Thank you, Shelagh, for giving me the precise date of marriage as 29 October, 1895. A previous informer had given me November, which I assume was the month of registration.
Yes, I have now traced Helen's family in Roxburghshire way back to the early 1800s and beyond; also Samuel's family back in Cheshire.
