Henrietta or Annie?
« on: Saturday 28 July 07 22:31 BST (UK) »

Hi All,

I've got a puzzle you guys may be able to help with.

1881 RG11, Piece 2098, Folio 45, Page 32
1891 RG12, Piece 1641, Folio 43, Page 36
1901 RG13, Piece 1985, Folio 52, Page 37

John Cooper is in all three. In 1881 and 1891 they are even at the same address. I am confident this is the same family.

In 1881 (RG11, Piece 2098, Folio 51, Page 43) and 1891 (above) Thomas Stockley is married (1875 Q4 Wareham 5a 632) to Phoebe Stockley . Phoebe died in 1892 (1892 Q4 Wareham 5a 175).

In 1901 Thomas is married to Henrietta, probably his landlord's daughter (who also appears in 1881 aged eight).

My problem is, where is Henrietta in 1891, or are Annie and Henrietta the same person? There is an Annie in 1891, of the correct age, and there is a marriage of an Annie Cooper to a Thomas Stockley (1893 Q1 Wareham 5a 394).

Henrietta is probably Henrietta Selina Cooper (1873 Q1 Wareham 5a 308) so Annie is not her middle name.

Both children of Thomas and Annie/Henrietta were born after Phoebe died and the Annie marriage.

Any ideas?

Paul

Hi Paul

I can only assume that Annie/Henrietta are the same person. There was another Annie born at about the same time in Swanage/Wareham but she appears in each census & seems to have married in 1894.

I can only assume that Annie was a family "pet" name & for some reason when she married she used this name. Realising or finding out her baptism name, she reverted to that on the next census. The marriage certificate would presumably identify her father. Did she have a grandmother Annie - sometimes if a child is like another relative, they are known by that name - although there can be many reasons for folks to be known by other than their original given name.
