If this was the right year, then this might be the death... Deaths March Q. 1890 Ferguson John age 52 Wigton vol. 10b pge. 381 perhaps cause will be listed on the death cert.
and this should be the birth then...
Births Dec Q 1838 Ferguson John James Carlisle vol. 25 pge64

You'd have to see if the death records have any information... First you need to confirm the date of death to even get hold of the records...Do you have a gravestone, or actual information on your man?
There is a John /Orton 1838 on the 1881 with a family of seven living Dalston, Cumberland...first born 1868...3rd born 1872...Scotland so if this is right he won't be on 1871 for Eng....This says occupation quarryman...do you know the occupation? J.J.

A marriage of a William to SARAH JOHNSTON May 21 1836 Holme Cultram, Cumberland, England
so this would also account for the forename Johnston!
SARAH JOHNSON Christened March 26 1809 Thursby, Cumberland, England Parents JESSE JOHNSON & JANNET CULLEN
This and Christening of siblings for John can be found here...on the IGI http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

here is the 1881...Note spelling of Jannet. John FERGUSON 43 Orton Quarryman Freestone Margaret FERGUSON 37 Scotland Wife Annie 13 Scotland Sarah J. 11 Scotland Joseph Son 9 Scotland Mary 7 Westward, Cumberland Jannet 4 Dalston, Cumberland Margaret 2 Dalston, Christopher 5 m Dalston
Dalston is still in Carlisle...could someone see where Margaret is as a widow in 1891? Although it looks as though his work took him all over so he could have died anywhere... I imagine his occupation was also a very dangerous job...
