Oxford City Survey 1772
« on: Tuesday 31 July 07 09:21 UTC (UK) »

I have in my possession a booklet, published in 1912 by the University Press titled: Survey of Oxford in 1772, by Rev H Salter. It is a typescript of a document produced in consequence of the Mileways Act of 1771, giving a list, street-by street of the inhabitants (heads of household only) in Oxford at a date roughly calculated to be between April & August 1772. The purpose of the Act was the widening & repairing the approaches to the City, removing two of the city gates & rebuilding Magdalen Bridge. In addition to the list of names there is a measurement of the width of the premises frontage & the street number a sit would have been in 1911.
I would be willing to check any queries by surname or street,
