Female census enumerator!
« on: Tuesday 31 July 07 21:03 BST (UK) »

I think I may have found one of the few female census enumerators, on the 1881 census. It looks like Mrs E M Froud was the enumerator for District 2 of Long Ashton, Somerset! Having looked her up Mrs Eliza Mary Froud she lived in district 1 and was an Assistant Overseer and Governess so I think it was definitly her.

Have any other rootschatters come across any women census enumerators in their research?

Being a female enumerator in 1881 she would have met some trouble I imagine.   Good on her for doing it.

Yeah, great to see it. Even if she did meet trouble she took some of the first steps in sorting out a large part of gender equality issues of the time!

I wonder what her background was...
Random genealogy anyone? Smiley

Try and catch the episode 'Victoria's Sisters' - in the Simon Shama series on the History of Britain.

Great to see how the ladies were getting involved much more, altho to my surprise Queen Vic wasnt particularly supportive ....
