3 Ruby Place (in 1901) Tilney St Lawrence
« on: Wednesday 01 August 07 20:52 BST (UK) »

I don't know Tilney St Lawrence.  In 1901, William (1847)and Betsy (1848) Esgate and their children, one of the being Nellie Esgate (1888), lived at 3 Ruby Place, Tilney St Lawrence.  On the census, a lady publican lived at Number 1 and 2 Ruby Place, hence I assume this was a pub.

Does anyone know if number 3 Ruby Place still exists.  Also, if 1 and 2 was a pub, where would i get a picture of it from about the 1900's, hopefully it might have number 3 Ruby Place on it!   Where could I get a map of Tilney St Lawrence, showing Ruby Place in about the 1900's?

Lots of questions I know... but I am new to this.

Thanks  Huh

Hi Nikk

Tilney St Lawrence has been fairly well modernised village, so I would have thought that Ruby Place may well have gone by now, but I will be going through the village on Friday, and will have a look around. But there has been a lot of modern housing developement done in the village over the last few years. I carnt see a Ruby Place on a modern map of the village.

Hi Nikk

Just had alook at the 1901 census sheet for them and they are living in 3 Ruby Place, Wisbech St Peter , and not Tilney St Lawrence. 1891 they were living in Tilney St Lawrence.
Wisbech St Peter is in Wisbech, Cambs

Hi Nik

My mum & I have not finished transcribing the PRs for Tilney St.Lawrence yet so have not covered the years you need for THORP & ESGATE entries. Keep an eye on Norfolk Lookup page to see when we have covered the years you need.
http://www.origins.org.uk/genuki/NFK/volunteers/lookups.shtml

I did check the other parishes we have transcribed local to TSL & if you think this is your Nellie then I found these 2 entries in Terrington St.John's.

banns 1754-1812 & 1823-1956 (1813-1822 register is missing)
1869, 26th Apr, 2nd May & 9th May
William ESGATE, single, of Tilney St.Lawrence
Betsey THORP, single, of this parish

marriages 1538-1976
1869, 25th May by banns
Groom, William ESGATE, single, 21, Miller, Tilney St Lawrence (signed)
Bride, Betsy THORP, single, 21, of this Parish (signed)
Groom's Father, William ESGATE, Farmer
Bride's father, John THORP, Farmer
Witnesses, John THORP, Mary THORP & Jane THORP (all signed

Regards

Hi Nikk

Will try and see a person during the week who was born and lived in Wisbech all his life, will ask him if he knew where Ruby Place was in Wisbech St Peter, or knows if I can find out for you.

Thanks so much Ricky and Sally.  I have returned home from holiday... and am sitting here trying to file all the bits and pieces I have found out so far... but there is loads that I need to learn about tracing my family back.  You are obviously both very good at this.

I am really getting into this.
I really appreciate your help so fat.

Hi Nikk

Spoke to a local man about your Ruby Place, It has now gone, and where it used to be is the Ambulance Station now, which is near the hospital in Wisbech

Thank you so much... I would never have been able to find that out.  Do you know when  the later building was built approx?

Are we talking years ago, or more recently?
