Hi Mark,
Did John marry? You might be able to confirm his father from the certificate.
There is a possible marriage on www.freebmd.org.uk:
VERNEY John Jun 1844 Winslow 6 559
Winslow registration district includes Great Horwood.

I have my ancestors as George Verney born about 1787 and Frances born about 1796. One of their sons was John born 1823, who married Hannah Skelton born 1825. I have the impression that George either came from Great Horwood or was a descendant of a Verney from Gt Horwood. Can anyone make that link ?

Hi
Many thanks for the response. I am descended from Elizabeth born 14/10/1849, via her eldest son Edgar. John and Hannah are buried in Whaddon churchyard although I expect you knew that. I have their marriage on 13/5/1844, John died 29/11/1904, aged 81, and Hannah 13/3/1914, aged 89, so they had long lives.

Hi Mark Yes I am Peter Verney, grandson of Edgar Felix Riley Verney. He was killed in a riding accident while working for the East Kent Hunt which was owned by Selby Lowndes who had moved down from Whaddon and taken Edgar and I guess various other servants with him. I have the theory that the Verney family of Whaddon/Winslow were maintained by the Lowndes to breed servants from! It is noticeable that there are quite a few Verneys in London who I think were also exported by the Lowndes from Winslow. My father was born in Winslow just up the road from Winslow Hall, which was home to another branch of the Lowndes family. My fathers eldest brother, another Edgar was kept on at Elham by Selby Lowndes and trained to drive his car. I had been told of Elizabeths eventual marriage to Thomas Lloyd in Everton on 29/3/1877 where she had Edward b 1878 and Thomas William b 8/5/1879. Her second illeg son was Charles Ashton Verney. Are you related Regards Peter
