Looking for VERNEY Parents
« on: Thursday 02 August 07 13:33 BST (UK) »

Hi,

My ggg gf was John Verney, born in Winslow in 1823. I've got a fair bit of information about him and his siblings and their descendants.

However all I know of his parents is that they were probably George Verney (born 1790) and Frances somebody (born about 1796). A number of people researching the family have arrived at these people so looks like it is correct.

Is there anybody out there who'd be able to check the Winslow PRs to (a) confirm that this is right and (b) possibly try and track down the origins of George and Frances? I don't if they were Winslow people or whether they came from elsewhere. For some reason now lost in the mists of time I have a feeling there is a connection with Great Horwood but I can't be sure.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Did John marry?  You  might be able to confirm his father from the certificate.

There is a possible marriage on www.freebmd.org.uk:

VERNEY  John   Jun 1844   Winslow  6    559

Winslow registration district includes Great Horwood.

You're quite right, that is his wedding - I hadn't thought of that so I'll send off for the certificate! Many thanks.

I have my ancestors as George Verney born about 1787 and Frances born about 1796. One of their sons was John born 1823, who married Hannah Skelton born 1825.
I have the impression that George either came from Great Horwood or was a descendant of a Verney from Gt Horwood.
Can anyone make that link ?

Hi Navrad,

Please see the thread at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,271938.0.html

George was from Winslow after all. John married Hannah Shelton, born 1825 in Adstock.

So far I've not traced back to Great Horwood so still no evidence of that unfortunately.

Which of John's children do you descend from?

Hi

Many thanks for the response.
I am descended from Elizabeth born 14/10/1849, via her eldest son Edgar.
John and Hannah are buried in Whaddon churchyard although I expect you knew that. I have their marriage on 13/5/1844, John died 29/11/1904, aged 81, and Hannah 13/3/1914, aged 89, so they had long lives.

Hi Navrad,

Yes, I have been to Whaddon - I realised they must have died there and had probably been buried at the church and it was a moving moment to discover the grave. John was a coachman and I also worked out where he lived, based on the census. The house is still there.

I've come across Edgar Verney before and have been in touch with another descendant of his (Peter Verney - that's not you is it?!).  Elizabeth or Eliza as she seems to be often called was a bit of a tearaway by all accounts and the assumption is that Edgar's father was one Felix Riley, though no proof of that. She had another son, Charles, in 1871 and later married and lived in Liverpool where she had more children. I have also been in touch with a descendant from this marriage. Sadly I believe Edgar moved south in the employ of a member of the Lowndes family and was killed in a riding accident at the age of 39. Perhaps you know more about this?

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark
Yes I am Peter Verney, grandson of Edgar Felix Riley Verney. He was killed in a riding accident while working for the East Kent Hunt which was owned by Selby Lowndes who had moved down from Whaddon and taken Edgar and I guess various other servants with him.
I have the theory that the Verney family of Whaddon/Winslow were maintained by the Lowndes to breed servants from! It is noticeable that there are quite a few Verneys in London who I think were also exported by the Lowndes from Winslow.
My father was born in Winslow just up the road from Winslow Hall, which was home to another branch of the Lowndes family. My fathers eldest brother, another Edgar was kept on at Elham by Selby Lowndes and trained to drive his car.
I had been told of Elizabeths eventual marriage to Thomas Lloyd in Everton on 29/3/1877 where she had Edward b 1878 and Thomas William b 8/5/1879.
Her second illeg son was Charles Ashton Verney.
Are you related
Regards
Peter
