Birth lookup please - CARR 1839 - Hume
« on: Thursday 02 August 07 13:53 BST (UK) »

Hi

Charles Carr (possibly CHARLES W CARR) was born in 1839 and the first record I can find is the 1851 England census that lists his birthplace only as Scotland. The 1881 census has him being born at 'callu (or calla) hume'. Could he be from Hume, does anyone have access to the parish register or have any advice that may be able to shed light on this?

Hi

It would be useful having the name of Charles' father to help search for his birth (England) or baptism (Scotland).

This can be obtained from Charles' marriage Certificate.  He married Mary A Westmorland in 1861 Durham Northern.  You can order the Certificate through the Durham County Council website.

http://www.durham.gov.uk/gro/newgro.nsf/search?

The same site gives the birth of the first child on the 1871 Census as David W, born 1862 Durham Northern.

Hi Helen

that's really useful information, i'll get the certificate ordered and we'll take it from there. I didn't realise that the father would be on the certificate. This is really going to help.

very many thanks

Hi

I've managed to get the birth certificate. His father's name was James Carr and profession was Husbandman. Does this help?

Hi

I've looked at the Scottish OPR's and there is no Charles CARR born around 1839 with a father named James.  This doesn't mean that Charles wasn't born in Scotland - only that he wasn't baptised in the Church of Scotland.

I've also not been able to find Charles and James CARR together at the 1841 Census either in England or Scotland.

Was James CARR recorded as deceased on the Marriage Certificate of Charles?

Where did the Marriage take place and what residence was given for Charles?

Hi Helen

Thanks so much for looking into it. It really is a puzzle.

James Carr was listed as a husbandman on the marriage certificate, I did wonder about the deceased aspect but guess as an occupation is listed he was still around (or at least it wasn't known if he was deceased or not?) He hasn't signed as a witness, the bride's father did and so did the Parish Clerk. I don't know whether this is usual or not.

The marriage took place on 22 Dec 1861 at the Parish Church of Chester-le-Street where both Charles and his bride are listed as being resident.

All i've been able to find are a scattering of Charles Carrs and a scattering of James Carrs but they never seem to meet. They seem to have moved around Berwick/Northumberland and there's a James Carr who was deported to Australia from Northumberland in 1840 but that might be just a bit too convenient an act to solve this riddle.

Once again, thanks for your help

Hi Joe

I did see that 1841 Census entry, but couldn't find father James on his own anywhere.

I also couldn't relate the Agnes Alexander to Charles Carr, but it seems that you might have answered that one - well done.

Certainly worth looking into I would have thought.

Hi Helen & Joe

This is excellent! Charles Carr in Angus kept cropping up but I couldn't positively tie him in, looks like Joe may well have opened the door.

Charles had a daughter called Agnes, admittedly not the strongest evidence in the world. but it fits in with other naming patterns

Thank you both so much

Don't know anything about Dundee Loan - this is the address given on the 1841 Census Index as well as Parish of Forfar, County of Angus.

It might be worth asking on the Angus (Forfarshire) board.

Thanks Helen, I managed to find an old map of Forfar online and i've discovered it was (is) the name of a road - I didn't think it sounded very road-like and thought it could be something else
