Maules of Panmure
« on: Thursday 02 August 07 19:36 BST (UK) »

Am wondering if there are any records of the 'lesser' sons of the Maules of Panmure. I can only trace the eldest/eldest surviving sons, the younger ones tend to drift into obscurity.
My Grandfather, James Finlay Maule, talks of our links to Panmure, but as yet cannot make complete link.
   Thankyou,

Hi Gavin,

Can you give us any details of names and dates etc please.  Without this we cannot help you.  Maybe on the other hand Scottish records don't got far enough for the information you need but if you can post some information it would help.

Dear Elisabeth1 & Forfarian

The furtherest back I can go is John Maule m Janet Sibbet, who had Children,
     Alexander Bn 1803
     Robert Bn 1805
     John Bn 1809
Anne Bn 1805 (presume twin to Rbt)
     Thomas
     William
     Catherine
     Susan
     Mary
     Agnes.
Most births seem to be in Tulliallan, Perthshire (now Fifeshire).
Yes, I have seen the Maule family site, but lineage seems to concentrate on eldest sons.
    Thanks for the help,
        Regards,
            Gavin.

Hello all. My sister found this site, and I have just joined, hence the late reply. I'm the one who set up www.maulefamily.com (becoming out of date as I gather more information). What's on the site is everything that came my way as of the time I set up the pages. Those who gathered the information (much of what I have came from others) tried to track all Maule families. If younger sons and their lineages "disappear" it's because we did not have the information. Until the advent of census records and surviving church records, the information tended to focus on the eldest children (who inherited lands), which makes it difficult to link the various families. There is such a gap in the 1500s and 1600s, and if more records from that era ever come to light, genealogists will be elated.

We "know" many of these groups link to the Panmure Maules, but we don't have the proof. Yet.

Anyhow, after the pages were posted (they need to be updated and when I can, I will), I learned about John Maule and Janet Sibbet. It appears to me that Alexander Maule, Tree 20, is one of their children. It also appears that John Maule, Tree 50, is another of their children. It could be that Robert, Tree 18, of the Maule Dept. Store family, is another of their children (and in that family a link to the Panmure Maules also is claimed).

If you look at Tree 5, thre is an Alexander b 1754, son of John, b 1710 (ironically the oldest son, but we have almost nothing on his descendants). Could this Alexander be the father of John Maule who md. Janet Sibbet? That would make sense, but it is total speculation on my part.

Once I finish several current genealogy projects (chiefly a US census update of the descendants of Thomas Maule of Salem, Mass.) I intend to find a way to update those family group charts, as I have several others that I've linked together. The information came to me in a proprietary format that does not convert to gedcom or anything else, so it will involve much retyping. Much may be an understated word!

I hope this has helped.

Jim

What appears to be missing is anything telling us the parentage of the John Maule who married Janet Sibbett. Has anyone found a birth record or other information that identifies the father of this particular John Maule? That would link four of the family groups!
